I would say it depends on the situation at hand as to whether or not you 'need to evaluate it in replay'
In this case Glen was asking about a basic engine crank/cam timing check.
I was simply stating that there was no need in this situation to overcomplicate things and start getting into looking at phase shifting between the two signals, if the chain is worn the mechanical timing shift caused by the tensioner taking up the slack will be seen at idle (in a few seconds).
A lot of simple scope tests can become overcomplicated too easily in my opinion. Extract what you need in the easiest way possible and keep it simple whenever you can would be my advise.
