Isn't it funny how you find these things out after you have been working on it for a while, I wonder why he didn't come clean and tell you the truth right from the start, And why the heck has he paid some garage £3,500 for a job that they haven't done or aren't capable of doing. ?? If he paid that much for it "Not fixing", I wonder how much he would be prepared to pay you to Fix it properly. ??
