Yep, the wires just rub, there is no protection above there, and the frame has some very sharp edges on!! Dash removal: If you can see it, take it off! Start with the centre console, it's only held in with 4-6 screws but makes life easier once it's out of the way. If I remember correctly, you can undo the steering column and drop it onto the seat, saves messing with the airbag/squib. I seem to remember something about the wiring?? Either the whole lot comes out with the dash (undone from the fusebox end), or you have to seperate it from the dash once the dash comes away. I can't remember without looking sorry (it was a long time ago)!!!
