Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Z16XEP 2005 - Intermitent cutting out #

Engine Code or CC *: Z16xep
( Optional ) ECU Type: multec sf-can

Hi all
Have the above vehicle in at the mo, intermitent cutting out on long journeys mainly on motorways. Fault coded on thursday and there was about 14 faults stored so i cleared them and took it for long drive but it went o.k, so i gave it back to the customer. She then rang on saturday and said it had cut out on the motorway after doing about 40 miles, she waited about 15 to 20 minutes then it started. Fault coded again today and came up with 8 faults.
P0230 Fuel pump power supply malfunction
P0650 MIL control circuit malfunction
P1550 Throttle valve control motor system or component in emergency mode.
P1660 Engine control unit programming fault
U2103 CAN bus malfunction
U2104 CAN data bus malfunction
U2108 CAN data bus, ABS control unit communication error.
U2139 CAN bus steering column module communication error.
Cleared the faults again and took it for a long drive and again it went o.k.
Checked the power supplies and earths to the engine control unit and all were good. I also fault coded the ABS system and got 1 fault code.
U2105 Communication with engine control unit faulty.
Im thinking that ive got an ecu problem but i cant be 100% certain. It would be most appreciated if anybody else had any thoughts on this.

Hi Jamie,
Had a similar experience with a Zafira B diesel six months ago.
Car cut out for no apparent reason & would not crank over.
By the time it was recovered to mine it did start under its own steam.
20 odd DTC's, This also had Engine control unit programming fault & CAN bus malfunction codes along with a shed load of low power codes across the ECU ranges.
This was a taxi with 90K & original battery, battery test was inconclusive so it was changed anyway.
He has had no problems since, but by the same token he had not had any issues before that time.

Just my twopennorth, as this is spookily similar.

Thanks for the reply, it does sound very similar. I will test the battery today and maybe even change it.

hi interesting proplem had one last year with abs light flashing on then no start dealer fitted new abs control unit under warrenty used wiring for imob apperently on abs , wondered what the problem was in the end no fix posted

I know this thread was a little time a go but did you find a fix or has any one else got any ideas as i have had a zafira in today with the same codes and checked all earth points and power points and not found any faults.

ECU failure is not uncommon.
I use ACTronics for these hybrid ECUs.

Thanks shaun some body else has told me about the cim module going faulty. I will have a word with customer and she what see wants to do.

Hi mark,
I had one of these and it was coming up with ecu failure.
There is a vauxhall tsb on the matter and you need to make sure the car has a good quality coil pack on it like genuine or Delphi and make sure you don't fit NGk plugs!
