Seat Toledo V5 AGZ 2000 - Poor running and will not rev, codes 00561 & 00525 #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
Engine Code or CC *: agz
( Optional ) Scanner Used: solus

Car was running lumpy on start up when cold carried out fault code read. Codes 00561 00525 came out cleared codes now car wont even rev just about idles any help appriciated ps before this drove car 180 miles no problem regards adrian

hi yes fly by wire 00561 fuel leval low fuel pressue /pump intake/exhaust leak misfire map sensor maf sensor filament burnt off h20s evap canister purge valve injectors excessive fuel in oil 00525 heated oxygen sensor h2os implausible signal wiring ho2s heating inopertive these codes have cleared & now there no codes showing regards adrian

Can your piece of kit show you what the Accelerator pedal is doing and can it actuate the throttle motor?

Hi, If you think about the two fault codes that were present, and How the ECU would react to the two codes,and then look back at what you have done and you should be able to answer your question with regard to why it will not rev now.

I hate seeing these "holier than thou, I know the answer but you don't replies", Mark and Mike a little explanation might help the poster to at least take some steps in the right direction to get rid of the car that he has posted about !

I agree with Tony, but I can see where Mark is coming from. He is trying to get Adrian to think it through and I would seriously hope a little prompting later on if the penny doesn't drop. I have studied Marks comments and to be honest, I am no closer to the answer! But there you are, we all have our limitations and this is where valued opinions are appreciated.

Measured words Pete, I find I am spending a lot more time on Ilexa as even the real specialists there on several different marques still come across as really friendly and offer advice to even the first time poster as they would to a seasoned Pro in the car repair game.

I thought the object of this site was "to offer assistance and advice", with problems encountered by members in the field, but, I now begin to wonder ???

I always post if I have a valid input to a members problem, but, to say " I agree with the above post " does nothing to help a subscribing member who has put that post up in the first place !

Might appear to be grumpy, and it is late but they are my thoughts,

if it ran before the codes were erased but doesnt after would that point to erasing the codes has also erased the adaptions?
i thought marks answer was a good one

Hi Tony,

You have been a member of UKAT from the early days, As have I. And in those days there was very little on the internet apart from IATN to help find the information we need to diagnose and repair modern vehicles.

You could say that most early members were at a similar level to each other and wanted to learn in order to progress.

If anyone posted then with little information or no meffort put in with tests performed, they would not have got much of a responce then either.

UKAT has become a casualty of its own success and a lot of people join just to get a quick fix there by avoiding having to put any effort in. And now with so many other Automotive forums being created and Google etc the Answers are out there if you can be bothered looking for them.

I earn my livimg from diagnostics, I don't do clutches, brakes or servicing. Most of my work is trade or trade referal. Over the years I have spent many hrs researching, studying and developing my skills to get me to where I am today. So I am not prepared to just give that away to anyone who can't be bothered putting in a little bit of effort.

I will however sometimes point them in the right direction. In Adrians case, surely the next thing to do would be to look up what his fault codes mean (which I did when I read Marks response). Once he has some idea of what they mean and he thinks about what might have happened when he cleared the trouble codes he is nearly there.

We once had a theory/education board on here although I think it had a stigma for aprentices so it failed to work, maybe we need one again. for new members.

Holier than thou no, concerned at the level of knowledge from a greater than is acceptable proportion of our industry yes.

Good points made Tony. However the only grump I had with Adrians post was the lack of detail. I wish members would detail the fault code meaning as well as the code to save having to look them up which saves time when trying to help.

Moving on to the problem with this vehicle, I am now assuming that the car has become a non-runner due to Adrian clearing the fault codes which has also erased the adaptions. Have to admit that I was unaware that this could happen. I thought the adaptions would be returned to initial base values and the car would then run. If there was a throttle body fault then the codes would re-appear and the car would run poorly.

Fortunately, I have not come across the scenerio where I have left a customer with a non-runner after clearing codes

but this is a warning to me and others I guess.

YES I was, for two reasons, firstly, I find that if I just give the answer then although it may fix the vehicle in question, the same person is asking for the same type of help next week on another vehicle. However if the person has to think about it and do a bit of research, then he or she starts to understand the system they are working on and that information stays with the person for life.

Secondly, I do agree with Michael in the fact that I have spent, and am still spending a considerable amount of time learning, researching and experimenting on vehicles to get where I am (with still a long way to go)and although I will try to help anybody on this forum
I don't see why I should do the whole thing for them (if thats the case then bring it to me and let me bill you)The more people help themselves the more I am inclined to assist them. If that is wrong then I am sorry.

"Holier than thou" I am defiantly not, if thats the way it came across then again I am sorry.

I sometimes find I'm re-reading posts, over and over, trying to put the punctuation in myself, to make sense of it. Some posts are just like one long sentence. It would seem that a lot of posts are rushed, probably because of a busy workshop, but that extra few minutes of reviewing your post beforehand makes life easier for those reading them.
Quite a few posts have very little detail of vehicle spec and the work or tests that have been carried out already and then others post with a good list of what they have checked, with values they have seen etc, but then 'apologise for the long post'.
I don't mind reading a long post as I find I can do the job in my head almost. I would be thinking of my way of going about checking a system out and then see if the writer of the help request has done such. If not, another test can be suggested to them.
If they have carried out a test that has been mentioned, I often see replies of 'I already did that when it came in' etc. If this had been stated in the original post then the help replies would probably be of more use as less would be suggesting to try things that the person with the vehicle has already done.
This isn't aimed at any individuals, and I'm far from perfect myself, but some posts on here aren't far from those you see on owners club forums for complete amateurs.

Maybe if there was a slightly different layout for how you had to complete your original help request, such as the diag equipment used one, fault codes could be listed just under the make and model with engine size and code box.
One other annoying thing is when lots of help has been given and then the post dies off. Surely those cars can't still be hanging around in the workshop. What eventually fixed it?

I do read through all the posts when I have time and I do remember bits of info that have then helped when I have similar problems come into my place. Just one of those bits of info that saves me time on one job easily covers the cost to be a member of UKAT.
If it's a brain tease then I'll have a look in the archives to see if there's additional info of a known issue with a vehicle but then I've also have a good look at the systems, wiring diagrams and pinouts, expected values etc before I even open the bonnet on a lot of jobs so I'm prepared for diagnosing that vehicle. A lot of people don't seem to have the basic technical information a workshop dealing with modern vehicles needs.

Hope we can see an improvement in the posts and I see where the guys that have spent years in the diagnostic game are coming from with not just handing out the silver bullet. I don't think it's unreasonable to get the original poster to do some more suggested tests because that way they should also be educating themselves along the way.
I admit that I haven't been on many training courses but I do spend hours and hours reading up on new systems and teaching myself. I'm always learning something new each day and luckily I have a fairly good ability to retain that knowledge. If you don't have time to spend hours investigating the faults then maybe you should just sub out all of your diagnostic work and carry on with the service and brake pad work. It may be more profitable for you anyway.

As some-one who has been on the receiving end of Mark’s “What happens when .. ..?” Or, “if you do this, what will the effect of that be?” on a few occasions. I will admit it can be frustrating if you cannot work it out.
On one occasion I said to him .. “Give me the answer & I’ll work it out backwards”.
“NO” came the stern reply. A minute or two later .. Bang the penny dropped and I will remember that particular systems operation always.
It’s, if you have to fight or work hard for something, you are not going to forget it.

I also did that but, was not aware that clearing them would have the effect it did. So maybe your following comment is not a terrible idea.

In my own case, I have recently arrived at the diagnostics world & freely admit it is more through necessity than choice. The phrase “every thing has a bloody wire coming from it nowadays” will, I’m sure, be recognised by most people.

Think of it in this way,

If your son comes to you for help with his maths homework you have two ways to help
1 Give him the answers
2 Explain the problem to him + how to work it out for himself and then help him along as he works it out

Now if you decide to help using option 1 how many times do you keep doing this as he learns nothing and you keep repeating the same work night after night after night
Or would you chose option 2 and when he gets comfortable at that level you can watch him progress and improve himself.

Which option would you chose honestly?
