Seat Altea 1.6 BSE 2008 - Non start with no comms - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2008
Engine Size and Code *: 1600 bse
( Optional ) Scanner Used: vagcom and scope
( Optional) Fault Codes: 28836,28884,28818,29119,16897,28827

Hello all

Car seems to be immobilized, all the fault codes in the engine ecu above relate to no comms with other modules, I cannot comms with other modules either, car as come from another garage who had had it valeted a few hrs earlier and then when they tried to restart it failed so was towed to me...
Really after any suggestions to where to start

Hi does fuel pump prime when door opened?
Isx the dash lights coming on?
The gate way is under steering area, possibly knocked during valeting. Do the systems not communicated with still work properly. I.e. can you lock car with remote. Does the steering wheel sound the horn, can you open passenger window from drivers side?
The diagnostic socket on this should be diagnostic can, this would prevent comms but not necessarily stop systems working. Do distributed functions, what works, what does not. Check diagnoctic socket and gate way.

Hi lee, try pressing left hand button on dahs panel to wake J285 up. Might be wake up wire fault as well.

Hi james, yes systems seem to be working, like horn, window open, car unlock-lock etc, dash lights work aprt from battery light ? I must admit i cant hear fuel pump !

I can hear the fuel pump kicking in when opening the door, looking for the gateway module above pedal box area and its defo not there as i have seen on the leon's etc, cant see and buttons on dash either to bump j285 which i think is the instrument cluster..

Ill Have a look for some stuff tomorrow, locations etc. That was the newer altea, Ill try and find older one.

Hi Lee,

Stab in the dark but did you get any other information out of them? , did the battery go flat then jump started ? have you looked for blown fuses? Multi function control module might be worth a look at here

Cheers jim for input, yes john the battery is not the best on it, not sure if it went flat originally thoug, yes check fuses. The codes are no comms with hvac, steering module, diagnostic gateway,invalid data from diag gateway,incorrect key(spare key as been tried), no comms with cluster- all in that order in engine ecu.
Cannot connect to any other module with vcds, so not alot to go on here..

Hi Lee, the gateway is on pasenger side on these ones. Under glovebox next to aircon pack. Let me know if you need anything else

Just to start somewhere i thought i would check canbus high and low at the 16 pin with the scope, not happy with what i am seeing, half a volt on either side of can low and high. I really need a full wiring schematic for this car if anyone outthere as one.I did find the gateway behind the glove box but not sure how to check, i did disconnect gateway and watched scope on high and low and noticed it dropped to 0 volts on both sides, then back to half volt when reconnected, but short of the 2.5volts i am expecting !

Hi Lee, Ill look monday. Did you have any power supplies and earths at the gateway?
Were the connectors secure?
Was the can switching at the 16 pin?
Try resitance check, 60 ohms across the hi and lo pins.

As mentioned check for both supplys and earth at gateway module, and have also seen these with water ingress, have you opened it up. What happens to CAN when you unplug other modules?

So far,pin 6 an 14 diagnosctic socket 66 ohms (too high)disconnect cluster an steering ecu nothing changes, i have 60 ohms on steering canbus.
At gateway pin 10, 12.5+
pin 5, 14v
pin 20, .5v
pins 8,6,grounds, pin 1 .5v ground

Not sure how to test pin 16 which jim mention for switching ?
Any more input gents is appreaciated

Hi Lee, 66 ohms is fine. Line i intact.
You need to check supply at T20/14 AND T20/1. tHEY ARE FED AT FUSE 12 AND 28 UNDER SCUTTLE PANEL IN ENGINE BAY. Fuse 14 under left dash.
Earth point t20/11 goes to left hand a pillar, there should be 2.
T20/19 AND t20/9 ARE FOR DIAG SOCKET.

Hi jim again, fuse 12 next to battery was absent, so i put it in and made no difference.
I went to terminal 14 at gateway which was battery voltage, but terminal 20 was only 0.5v so am assuming the fault lies here, but you mention T20 and T20/1 ?
Then mention earth point T20 again with 11, which i do have earth at terminal 11.
Thanks again bud, i really want to get the bottom of this as i will learn something aswell..

T20 is the 20 pin connector. the terminals should all have voltage except 11 which is earth.
voltage at terminal 14 means J519 is operating relay. Terminal 1 comes from fuse 12 in e box in engine and terminal 20 is a can hi wire.

Big thanks to James for givinge info on this car, could not have done it without his input. One new can gateway and car fires up.
