If one looks at the Guardian's attempt to capitalise on its 'left-leaning' image in the US, one finds that this has been a dismal close to catastrophic failure. They have lost an absolute fortune, over there. Hundreds of millions of pounds down the toilet with nothing to show for it. So the 'economic' argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Something else is going on I think. What's the true role of the Guardian? It's there to corral sensible and reasonable liberal/left opinion and stop it becoming... 'radicalised.' That's why, I'd contend, consdisiding the colossal cost of their US misadventure, it hasn't gone bust and folded. The corporate advertisers, or donors, are what's keeping it afloat financially, not the readers, who are leaving it in droves. The corporations and the state, which are linked at the hip, understand the value of the Guardian brand and don't want to see it go down.
