There's a few factors. Johnston Press in in trouble, the Sun is losing money hand over fist...Print is basically dead: all functioning and remaining semi functioning newspapers are actually websites and as such have a potential world reach. The two main sources of revenue are: 1. Advertising to sell products 2. Narrative to sell politics. - most mix both, the politics being either proprietorially subsidised or otherwise covered by some supposedly "philanthropic" trust. The International nature of a Website as opposed to a Provincial or National Newspaper means that both advertising product and political outlook are geared to a wider International "norm": An English online News-site means of course that the norm tends to be the US political norm. The race is to fill the top International niches. It's no surprise that the tabloid Daily Mail has been the most successful: the world’s most popular newspaper website apparently, using gossip, scandal and celeb tat to pull in the punters...feeding them adverts & a bit of the proprietors fascism in between the skimpy swimsuits and gossip about famous people the rest of us have never heard of.
