I think there is some credit to the idea that the "establishment" is keeping them afloat now, but the original "leap to the right/the US" definitely began as them eyeing a new market as a way to change their fortunes. There was a lot of speculation (Nafeez Ahmed amongst others I believe) about who exactly provided the venture capital when they sold the Auto Trader arm of their stable and how much quid pro quo was involved and it's still a bit murky, but I think you can work some of the answers out based on what happened afterwards. So that's the before but now the after, when they are being bankrolled somewhat by the various foundations and think tanks is a different game. But it's still essentially "them" selling themselves in order to stay in business. The rise in advertorials and whatever they call their "this story is sponsored by such and such a foundation" stuff is evidence that these backers are, at least to some extent, determining the content of the website. At least that's how I see it. Perhaps the foundations foresaw that the fraud would run into trouble and need bailing out and saw in that an opportunity to get a fully Mockingbirded newsite with a clean skin so to speak. Who knows?
