'The trouble is, the kind of deal many voters wanted to emerge, was never going to be on offer.'
This kind neatly sums up the central 'paradox' relating to the Brexit vote. This means, because it's true, whether one likes it or not; that many people who voted for Brexit were not properly informed during the campaign about the consequences and the possible result of their vote. If people had been better informed the result would have been different. People were basically sold the lie that it was possible for the UK to 'have its cake and eat it', this was never going to happen. I don't see why people who, from my perspective, a close to 'slaves', would give a #### about the nationality of their master.
