I was thinking about some of th central 'dogmas' of both Scottish and Irish nationalism, and one that keeps cropping up is the concept of 'national sovereignty. I've heard people arguing that 'nothing good comes from rule from London.' I've heard Sinn Fein say this repeatedly. It's one of their dogmatic mantras. But is this true? It's a cathchy slogan, but does it stand up to sober scrutiny? It's seem odd that both groups of nationalists in Scotland and Ireland reject the role of London in their affairs, at the same time as the role of Bruxelles and the EU has never been stronger and more intrusive in their internal affairs. Hasn't one, in reality, just exchanged London for Bruxelles? Ah, but the crucial difference is, we chose to be ruled from Bruxelles. But is that really true? Isn't the essence of EU membership that national sovereignty in the European Union has been pooled? Which means that the nationalist dogma about 'our control and sovereignty' is not what they dream it is?
