Britain with an opt out wasn't going join the Euro which was a badly thought out project ( It had no powers of intervention aside from an inflation committee) from which the Greeks (who lied about their financial position to get in) should have exited. Monetary and Fiscal Policy work together in maintaining the health of any national economy. There was no reason to have a separate Monetary policy controlled (or indeed not) by Germany.
