My guess is that it has to do with the fact that the Guardian and its writers prided themselves on being at the left/liberal end of the spectrum. Assange and Corbyn - against whom they have waged a similarly vindictive jihad - smoked them out. That is, they (Guardian hacks) weren't able to simply ignore them, and yet the power centres they actually represented forbade them from showing support, or even telling the truth about them. Which meant they had a choice between being exposed as closet neoliberal, establishment-friendly frauds, or putting their careers on the line and taking a stand on principle. They didn't like being put in such a position as they had no intention of putting their careers on the line, and so felt a special vindictiveness towards the ones who exposed them.
