Rather breathless message, from the Saker, but it is descriptive of a US regime who are overextending themselves. The dangers are obvious because even this regime which might be weak, confused, clueless and run by a gang of incompetents still run a very powerful military machine. It wouldn't matter if this gang of incompetents were normal humane people, but they're thugs, they're a political mafia, and they are actually evil people. They might be quite nice to their families, mostly, but they are capable getting others to commit appalling acts of violence on their behalf. The Empire doesn't just appear to be strong, it is strong, and that's the problem - it can , like that bull in a china shop, can cause an almighty amount of damage in its confusion, as it has already done in so many other countries. If I were a Venezuelan, I'd not be reassured by any claim of weakness in the American Empire.

For another view on all this you can listen to the BBC World News Hour "interview" with Elliott Abrahams. There is actually the gentlest challenge to Elliott in regard to CIA interference, but honestly, it was pathetic, and in his last remark that a military option is still on the table, no challenge at all. Just mentioned as just another option. No challenge to the legality of this, no challenge as to the likely human cost. No mention of sanctions. No challenge to the claim that Maduro is not the legitimate president of Venezuela. No challenge to the claim Guido is the legitimate president. No challenge to American interference over years. I know people say that the BBC is "biased", and it undoubtedly is, but I think it's also, and perhaps most importantly, a moral thoughtlessness - a standoffishness that two sides of an argument may have a very different ethical and moral basis and yet somehow they have to be treated the same in the interestests of "fairness" It's how Israel gets away with its appalling abuse of power. .How can anyone, in particular an interviewer, with any ethical understanding of the world not understand the sheer nastiness of what is happening, and phrase their questions on the basis of a moral position, and a humane concern for the people of Venezuela, all of them. .
