I'm sure they've backed up their account content, offline. That's not the biggest issue, the biggest issue is the cutting off of a telephone line. "Offline" is useless for real-time inter-communication. We all know these platforms are used by spooks but they are the *only* public platforms we have. Twitter and Facebook are the latter day equivalent of the land telephone line. Why should we ban the telephone landlines just because the spooks are listening in: all we'd be doing is shooting ourselves in the foot by shutting down our only inter-communication platforms. Not sure what you mean by "open source applications"? Can we communicate with each other - in an up-to-the-minute way - via "open source applications'? Neutral social media platforms - as neutral as the old landline telephone in your home where you are free to have conversations on any subject without censorship - are what's needed. In South Africa during apartheid era, people knew the security police were listening in on bugged lines because of the online clicks you'd hear - and also because it became obvious landline communications were bugged... and postal mail was read. Did this mean it was advisable that everyone should abandon all phone and mail communication - and retreat into silent isolation? The opposite was true: the more people transparently utilised all communication platforms - openly witnessed by others - the less the state was able to get away with behind-the-scenes shenanigans. To abandon all communication platforms - however flawed - is to retreat into self-imposed silence and throw the baby out with the bathwater. Seems more effective to keep up a presence and keep talking on these pubic platforms. Roger Waters - with his 313 000 Twitter followers reading him in real-time - exposes what's going on by being an uncowed presence on Twitter - and by calling out their censorship and publicly disturbing their deceptive public narrative about "free speech", for all to see.
