I agree with you, derek. Also, soil contains ~3 times the amount of organic carbon than tree biomass globally, so that shouldn't be left out of the reckoning as it's huge. A fertile, well maintained (ie unexploited, well stewarded) soil can be up to around 10% OC, whereas poor, over exploited soils such as those fed annually - or even biennially with npk fertilisers (and, ofcourse, other degraded zones for a multiplicity of reasons) can be as low as 1%. So there's a relationship between the use of the land and the species of plant matter over ground (and indeed under, in the root zone). Also, not all trees are created equal; some, particularly nitrogen fixing species (leguminosae/fabaceae and some others) have a greater beneficial effect iro the carbon content. So, with thoughtful design and implementation, there's a great deal that can be done to mitigate the issue. Planting trees is a positive step in the right direction.
