Dominic Raab and Foreign Office today posted an eye-catching graphic on social media, proclaiming how much the UK loves and defends media freedom. The hypocrisy is astounding. I think they're making fatal mistakes here - in terms of optics. Not sure the UK has correctly game-planned the Assange factor: awareness is growing worldwide. Observing social media you see more Australians demonstrating, mounting artworks on Bondi Beach, seen by thousands, raising awareness with mobile billboards, etc. Even in South Africa, awareness grows ... and understanding and compassion are immediate and generously given. A Zulu guy distributing Assange flyers on a campus said with a laugh: "this is a white guy we Africans can appreciate" Australia and South Africa are members of the Commonwealth: the Commonwealth brand takes a knock if Assange becomes a martyr.
