Doesn't Chomsky also maintain the same line on Assad? On the issue of Syria, Chomsky has been disappointing, as Stephen Gowans has pointed out: Previous Message Gowans' points, paraphrased: Chomsky, commenting on the complex foreign intervention against Syria, is calling on the U.S. to maintain a military presence there in order to 'protect the Kurds.' Gowans disputes Chomsky's reasoning. 1. The occupation isn't 'small' as Chomsky alleges. Besides ground troops, there's the U.S.-directed YPG, and the massive power of the U.S. Air Force. 2. Chomsky ignores the purpose of the U.S. occupation, which is to weaken Syria and its control over its own oil, and block transit between Syria, Iraq, and Iran.
