Yes, as you say, arab nationalism and secularism have always been the issues, perhaps reaching a tipping point when Egypt almost merged with Syria under Nasser (he of the oops! - Heart attack sorry gotta go). Arab nationalist states made ideal soviet allies - socialist states, and Soviets did not need their oil. Fisk simply sold out. He was against the Iraq war, and probably could not face confronting the borg again at his age and with a different propaganda landscape, now, with no western boots officially on the ground and working for an almost bankrupt rag - the western public doesn't care much about Syria, too easy to call Fisk an Assadist and get him amputated. Same with Chomsky, lets be honest. He doesn't want to confront the borg again at his age, and when you have a certain level of visibility, just shutting up is less of an option though they probably both should. Fisk wrote that giant book, hopefully he can retire on the royalties.
