At the risk of being controversial, not all mass killings fit the definition of 'genocide' Archived Message

I think we all know there's a 'holocaust industry' which is used to excuse any and every action by the israeli state. I think, however, that not all mass killings amount to genocide in the true meaning of that word. Belgium's record in Congo is truly appalling with terrible atrocities but the single biggest mass killer was epidemic diseases followed by famine and plunging birth rates. The scale of the suffering, the indifference and criminal negligence towards the welfare of the Congolese people is beyond belief and constitutes a crime against humanity but I'm not sure it was genocide. The US's war against its indigenous people, however, does fit the description since many public figures went on the record to declare the intent of completely wiping out native Americans. The Jewish holocaust is not unique - other attempts have been made at other times and in other places to wipe out an entire people - but it was instrumental in destroying much of European jewry and there can be no doubt that is the end the Nazis intended just as they intended to move onto Slavs. Genuine acts of genocide, therefore, are different from mass killings and the two should not be confused.
