'Humanism' isn't necessarily benign, though it sounds as if it ought to be. As in the Abrahamic religions, humanity is special but humanity itself, rather than God, is in charge of its own destiny. Humanism, deriving from the Enlightenment, is an essentially western project, entailing all the consequences that flow from that, good or bad (mostly bad). Humanism is anthropocentric, panders to the hubristic conceit that humans are special. Insofar as Dawkins is a humanist, he betrays the naturalism that is at the heart of science. |
