I'm struck by the fact that today 280 physicians wrote and declared that airborne transmission was taking place, but this is the very thing that nothing except a gas mask can stop. The possibility of this transmission was ruled out months ago by many serious scientists, and the idea that the virus was this infectious. This was compared with some other virus where it was a danger - perhaps MERS? I think the argument that we should wear masks to protect others is specious, because if we are coughing and spluttering with CV infection then we shouldn't be walking around in a public place, and probably wouldn't be anyway. If we know we aren't infectious, because we aren't coughing, then why would we want to protect others from ourselves? The WHO doesn't actually have much recommendation on mask wearing. not that it can be trusted a priori of course. There is also evidence masks make it more likely your own breathing will be affected and make you more susceptible to any virus particles flooding in through the mask. But what would I know, "being bearded doesn't necessarily make you a sage" (D.Raoult June 24th) It also stops you wearing a mask, as you soon discover when going diving
