But you're talking about a virus that affects an infinitesimally small proportion of the population. How it's spread is immaterial. The aerosol thing, insofar as it applies to any virus*, applies equally to flu. Of course you could say we have long been been negligent in not shutting down countries over winter because of yearly flu outbreaks, as Shyaku said some time ago. At least that's consistent. *The notion of "viral contagion" - disease caused by exposure to a virus, is totally unproved. I believe most medics / pathologists would actually deny this their position. (Although they, mostly, act as if it is). Another view, not a new one, is that: - disease is an emergency cleansing reaction, after other means of purging toxins (metabolic, environmental) have failed. They have failed because there's either too much toxicity to deal with, or, the mechanism of dealing with it - mostly, the gut - is not working properly. Or both. - Life, organisms and the systems within them work, ONLY, as a symbiosis between non-self, "external" organisms, and "self". Mostly through the mediation of the digestive and immune systems. Without the non-self "germs", life cannot happen. Germs have many functions. - Viri and bacteria function in quite different ways as catalysts of cleansing reactions. Viri effect bacterial activity in different ways, acting directly on bacteria, also challenging the organism itself, and laying the ground for more bacterial activity. They also leave their DNA trace on the organism itself - affecting genetic mutation. - Therefore (well there are other facets too to this admittedly) the totality of these relations are a form of life - including our life. Known as the biome. - Suppressing activity of microorganisms weakens the biome, diminishes health. - Medicine / healing on an individual level is therefore about restoring / supporting the biome in... something closer to a state of balance. Specifically, ensuring functioning systems of cleansing / excretion, while supporting nutrition. (Also psychological, structural and other aspects. They all overlap) - Medicine that seeks to destroy the biome reduces health. Under this heading we can put most drugs, which are mostly immune-modifying that pervert the sympathetic - fight or flight - response, which acts to delay cleansing (... so you can safely run away). Also measures that destroy bacteria to the point of sterility. The outcome of this a lot of atopy, allergy and worse: weak, poorly-adapted organisms (people!) The corollary of this individual defensive medicine in the sphere of social medicine would be measures motivated by fear. The outcome is same in all cases: you find what you've sought to avoid.
