I think too many on the 'left' are romantic idealists, prone to the narcissism of virtue signalling. That is despite their obsessive competitive theorising and the narcissism of small differences. Too many believe - still - in the inevitability of progress (a kind of secular replacement for a belief in heaven) with a childish sense of hope and optimism. I think Graeber said something along the lines of needing to balance idealism with cynicism. Seeing the world as it is - the nature of power etc - makes one cynical. But, you have to face reality. But, what of true conservatism? Where are the Burkeans? Those who believe in society and its organic nature as something that transcends each generation, who believe in the ties which bind, who believe in a sense of continuity and place. Truth is conservatism sold out to capitalism many years ago.
