Alexi Sayle was interviewed recently about the Corbyn documentary he narrated, the plot to scupper him. Sayle didn't feel particularly comfortable having to step out and reveal his views as he prefers the 'licence' given to comics/jesters. I think it was on something calld the Not the Andrew Marr Show. Sayle wondered about this idea on the left that if the workers are united they can never be defeated. He thought that history showed something else. The worst thing, for him, was that for the first time in his life, people he knew were really afraid to speak out, especially in relation the current regime in the Labour Party, because speaking out might affect their ability to earn a living, there would be reprisals. It was a strange time. I think there has to be a dramatic collapse of the system before the left has a chance of emerging from the doldrums it finds itself stuck in. In contrast, it may never happen, if the State can manage to keep up apparances during a long, slow, decline, so that people don't really appreciate what's happening around them. A better and more competent leader than hapless Corbyn, would, of course have aimed to empower and mobilise his supporters, the wave, when he had them, when he actually had a chance to influence events. Only he didn't, on the contrary, he pissed it all away in favour of the myth of unity on the left. He staggering, given he lived within the beast, that he didn't understand this. Perhaps it was all inevitable, as they had no concept of power in society worth talking about.
