I agree with Mark contrary to popular belief the ball sinker dosen't roll around the action of the waves and current burries it.I also believe that when a ball sinker is used in a running rig and gets burried the hole in the sinker clogs up with sand etc and the fish dont run anywhere with the bait dont know why people call it a running rig.
If you dont want to or need to cast far you can use any type of sinker you want ie ball, pyramid, sand, spoon, sparkplugs, bits of chain anything at all but if you want to cast a bit further you need an aerodynamical sinker such as a bomb or torpedo shaped one. That little bit of extra distance could just mean a fish to take home.
Comparing heavy and light sinkers is rather like measuring cars against trucks. For the same engine capacity, one goes faster, the other carries a bigger load. From the beach ,this load capacity is the deciding factor.Additionally,a big sinker holds better in the tide and boosts tackle inertia.
