Things will have to change, as a government department is now putting its head on the chopping block.....the "OFT". The RMI will soon launch its new "CARWISE" scheme, which should have full OFT approval by the summer. This scheme is open to Independents and Dealers, the idea being that we all trade and keep paperwork up to a certain standard, with regular inspections and mystery shoppers So in order for an Independent to carryout a service for a customer to a high standard as would be expected, that Independent must have access to technical information/service codes etc. Withholding of certain technical information may cause problems with being able to service/repair a vehicle to the correct standard, and may result in a customer complaint against that Independent and action by the OFT In order for the CARWISE/OFT scheme to be seen as a raising of standards within the motor trade, then the RMI (carwise) and OFT must ensure that both the Independent and Dealers are allowed to trade on a level playing field The OFT cannot be seen to endorse the scheme, and allowing Dealers to have access to information which may be vital to carrying out a safe repair, and the Independent shut out in the cold I have paid my annual subscription to the RMI and i have paid the additional £100:00 to be part of the CARWISE scheme, but if they cannot deliver an even playing field for both Independents and Dealers, then i will be the first to withdraw my membership of the RMI and opt out of the CARWISE scheme So if you are a member of the RMI/CARWISE and you are denied access to service/activation codes etc, then i would complain strongly and directly to the OFT as they are backing the scheme Peter
