Re: Bartons Bakery
I worked shifts as a maintenance electrician in the late 60's. Anyone recall Peter Gulliver, Rex the foreman electrician. We had an electrician in our department named Dennis Nelson, a single bloke in his fifties, he was madly in love with one of the shop manageress, she however told him that she was not interested in any way. Poor old Dennis he went home one night after putting all his affairs in order and he did away with himself, really sad 'cos I liked Dennis he was a real gent. The work in the plant was sometimes unpleasant, especially in the provers and ovens. Conveyor belts always breaking or jamming, bread tins jammed everywhere, the bread plant manager pulling his hair out and screaming at the factory hands to clear the mess. The pigs did all right out of the huge dustbins up by the garage end of the bakery and the coach fitters shop, the bins were always full of scrapped bread and cakes. Best bit for me was a job in confectionary, we always had a taster of those lovely cream horns and hot sausage rolls. Good times looking back, shame about the pittance wages.
