Yes, EVs do have a charging problem with the delivery vans if bad weather. No range for the van to get back but saves money getting it recovered and using AA fuel

The only way a non-running EV can be recovered apparently.

No neutral available, so the motor is permenantly connected to the wheels meaning they can't be towed - permenant magnet motors act as generators when back driven.

Probably more than just a flat battery, as the AA & RAC have emergency recharging vans to put enough charge into a vehicle to allow it to be driven to a charge point.

More reasons not to want an EV !

No, they cannot be towed at all. When in the Toyota dealer, the salesman said they had one towed in with a flat battery just 6 miles. The repairs were going to cost half the value of the very new car so they were debating scrapping as not insured for negligence in towing and not under warranty either if you break it through being stupid

No, they cannot be towed at all.

It could've been pre-registered before delivery to the converters for internal conversion and spraying with different livery.
The base vehicles on most new motorhomes are pre-registered and can be more than a year old when sold new after conversion.

It's on flatbed truck, not being towed.

Hi Sprid, i see its on a truck but the vehicle itself cannot be towed with wheels revolving. I see your point, it could be a pre-reg.
I notice a lot of new motorhomes for sale locally new with older registration. Some have been on the sales lot well over 12 Months now. I saw one as i drove by, a VW small conversion was 65K but the large dealer nearby has about 500 for sale and some are over 80K. Big money to sleep in a field.

The only time the AA would deliver a non broken down vehicle is on compassionate grounds ie driver falling ill.

So mutch for modern vehicles like bikes with ride by wire throttles when that goes wrong you've had it..

Dave, do you have an example of a ride by wire throttle going wrong? Its something I've never heard of happening.

It certainly has never happened to any of my bikes, or my mates bikes, or to any bikes in the workshops of the various dealership I deal with, and I've never read about it ever being an issue in the motorcycle press.

I've heard of bikes going into a "limp home mode" when the ECU detects a serious problem, but never due to miss-functioning of the ride by wire throttle.

No I havnt but have you read the report on the recall of Hyundai cars and certain articles you can by front the shops ..So many faults in the circuit board whith circuit track too close together and overheating that's just in the rear facing camera one of many faults electrical ..

Sorry, I thought you were talking about critical components like ride by wire throttle. I didn't realize you were putting ancillary gadgets in the same category. A camera failure maybe annoying and cause a warning or fault code on the vehicle electronic management system its not really relevant to the working of the internal combustion engine. A circuit board could possibly overheat and catch fire but that's not a new problem = electrical fires have been around since Joe Lucas Prince of Darkness first cast his shadow over the automotive industry!

Indeed, Bonny Geoff. I'm well in touch with market via couple of dealer pals and motorhome social media. There was a rush to buy and a shortage of m/homes at the start of Covid due to an overwhelming demand to the extent that new orders were being taken with an 18 months or two years delivery. Much of it due to closed factories plus 'finished' base vehicles awaiting parts (headlamp units, windscreens and chips for ECU's). The price of new ones rocketing by 30%.
4 and 5 year old ones were selling for far more than when new.
The bubble burst early summer and dealers have become completely overrun with stock, due in large part to newcomers discovering that m/homing doesn't suit them plus the economic situation means that those who bought on finance regret having the repayments, upkeep, running and storage costs now they are back to work after the shutdowns and the vehicle is little used.
My m/home is 20 years old and I've had it for 11 years, touring only abroad and for accommodation at bike rallies.
I've been on a m/home forum for ten yeas and there are many disappointed new owners and posts from others who sold their 4 and 5 year old ones at far more than they cost them.
Just for interest, during the height of the Covid boom the car dealer son of a lady friend drove a battered car from Huddersfield to Exmouth to buy an unseen m/home privately. He abandoned the car in a side street (maybe you saw it) and drove the m/home back to Huddersfield. He was never contacted about the abandoned car.

We often have normal caravans dumped in side streets here and a few vehicles but they get moved by the Council eventually after the kids have had some stone throwing practice.
Going down the Plymouth road, there is a large storage area for campers that want to leave them for Winter. At least 1000 in the yard. Still popular locally. Our seafront normally has over 100 parked up looking out to sea all Summer as parking fee is low. They have now built an area behind and put water and toilets in but very few use it as no view of the sea. Worst part of this is the owners put tables and chairs across the footpath and cycle path blocking it.
I like to drive past these campers at 6.30 am with windows open and radio up high. I think they appreciate it as they still keep coming to listen

Better still, throw some bread onto the m/home roofs late at night so the the seagulls can have an early breakfast and thump around on the roof squawking.

There are certainly a lot of seagulls along there. They really appreciate fish and chips but very partial to burgers. Normally, these birds ambush kids holding food. very cunning lot and the ones at Torquay are champions at food stealing. If you go there one day, try eating fish and chips by the marina.

Another factor you didn't mention was that Stellantis delivered a near 2 year backlog of base vehicles to the manufacturers in the early Summer. These were then converted & pushed out to the dealers before the end of the model year.

Most of the large dealers have been saying for months that they are not buying in SH stock due to their being overstocked with new vans. I have my annual warranty service done in August at Camper UK in Lincoln (my local supplying dealer had dropped my franchise due to their inability to deliver new models following Covid & for the warranty to be validated the service had to be done by a franchised dealer) and the place was rammed with new stock - difficult to find a place on their plot to park while I went into reception.

I was tentatively thinking about giving up the MH after 14 years to do something different but, given the market conditions, have decided to keep it for at least another year - booked the ferry for another tour next year yesterday.

Exactly so, Nigel. There are numerous posts on my motorhome forum from disgruntled folk receiving a 'new' one only to find that the base vehicle spec'n has changed since they ordered it 18 months it two years previously, even down to the transmission and chassis rating.

I was tentatively thinking about giving up the MH after 14 years to do something different but, given the market conditions, have decided to keep it for at least another year - booked the ferry for another tour next year yesterday.

I'm in exactly the same quandary 30 years after starting motorhoming. I tour only abroad as I live just 20 miles from the Newhaven ferry and now being over 60 I qualify for 20% discount on the entire ticket which includes any passenger younger than 60.
Here's my first tiddler motorhome setting off for a rally in France........

Not from an established manufacturer, Spriddler.

My first "new" motorhome ( a Roller Team) was more than 12 months old (from when the van was built on a new chassis in Italy) when I bought it, but it was registered new on the day I bought it.

My subsequent vans were built to my order but I chose to have them registered 1st March regardless as to when they left the factory - one was delivered to the dealer the previous December.

Not sure how a foreign MH manufactuer would go about registering a chassis in the UK before conversion either ?

Some UK based "converters" of panel vans may indulge in dubious practices like pre-registering their base vehicles, but this would have negative side effects for the purcahser, as the van would be registed as "commercial" not "motohome" and have lower speed limits applied as result. DVLA are not very easily convinced to reclassify a vehicle originally registered as a commercial vehicle to a leisure vehicle + the warranty on the base vehicle would be expiring from the date it was registered + the "new" owner would go down on the V5C as the second owner. All the above would devalue the van & make it more difficult to sell, so why would they do it ?

The only valid reason I could see for pre-registering the base vehicle would be if they were a run-out model for a soon-to-be superceeded emissions class, where unsold stock had to be registered before a certain cut-off date to be allowed to be sold i.e. when Euro 4 was superceeded by Euro 5.

Yes, you're right about motorhomes. I was just musing that the Tesco panel van could've been pre-registered and mistakenly carried my motorhome thoughts into that Tesco 'panel van' type of scenario.
