Before you pass on…. Posted by Stephanie on May 23, 2023, 11:30 am Just taking a minute here to try and see if local residents, as in foreigners, have their paperwork together so next of kin or local friends are aware of your departing wishes! And why am I asking….because we currently have two situations that are a bit contentious and that is terribly sad! So I am proposing we all write down all pertinent information if it has not already been done, from who gets what locally, bank info, passwords to computers, telephone numbers of next of kin, your children and a myriad of other info and seal it up post on the outside your name and who to call…in case…and we will file it at the bookstore where many of us have keys and quick access! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as you can see this is just a quick version of my current thoughts! Gracias!

They want FULL family names. If you have a car make sure papers are in order. If you could give a local friend power of attorney that really helps.

It is a whole lot easier for half of a foreign married couple to pass away in the state of Guanajuato. All the surviving spouse has to show are both passports and the marriage license. Nada mas.

That was because we had in place a good Mexican will. The will delineated how my mom's local Mexican property was to be inherited and by whom. There were no surprise as all discussed it family. It was as easy to deal with the home in La Manzanilla as property in the USA. My advice is find a Mexican local real estate and/or legal expert who can help you write a valid Mexican will. A will in the USA is of no use with Mexico. Keep copies of the will both NOB if that applies and in Mexico. Having your wishes known ahead to time makes death easier for those left behind. Some of us here are now are second generation gringo La Manzanillans.

My good Mexican friend and I wendy to a notary in Manzanillo, and made an actual legal document that she can handle everything until my next of kin can get here. Then we each put all that information that would be needed in a folder, and we each have one including the key to my apartment. It will save a lot of frustration and time when needed. This will work for both residents and tourists while in the country.

It was advised to obtain a tarjeta inapam from SEDESOL. This is basically registering as a senior in Mexico. It took us 2 years and originals of both birth certificates and marriage license to obtain. We also had MX wills prepared. We certainly hope, should we face the problems with death in Mexico, both of these documents will assist in making it easier for the survivor or children to deal with our passing. The SEDESOL/INAPAM office we used was in La Huerta. The necessary documents can be found online. Tanny

Keeping up with the number of things needed to die in Mexico is killing me! I would gladly pay someone to take care of ALL of it for me. They could call it the lazy sinner special.

The real concern about not having your paperwork in order is that your heirs will have a hard time inheriting your property and even your personal belonging. The 2 people that recently died and many others in the past have had their property taken by the person they used to title it in. You better get a bank trust or the correct papers to keep this from happening. If the person that died wanted those people to have their property, they would have left it to them in their Will and maybe some did. Instead, these people are trying to take something that is not theirs and now the families have another hardship to deal with. Some of these people that have taken property have businesses in town and have left these families with nothing.

At least one of the lawyers is fully bi-lingual. I am presently dealing with them for all of the above concerns. One of the english speaking lawyers name is Grecia Gutierrez. Cell number 315 114 8130 They also do notary work.
