cabin construction Posted by Cat on November 4, 2023, 11:41 am Hello, I am going to be building a little cabin made of wood, I have all my plans ready, but I need someone who has knowledge of structural wood framing, has I lack experience, Anybody that could coach me? carpenter, builder, Jack of all trade ,architecte from up north who could sit down with me and look at my plans? Thank you so much for your help

It could be very beneficial to talk with the local Mexican contractors and ask them why that is. Wood may not be the best choice of materials to build with in thi region.

Please dont assume that I am clue less or unable to comprehend, communicate and respect craftmenship of mexican contractors and architecture and the challenges and codes that applies with the flora, fauna and weather challenges... Maybe I need to build a wood frame structure with some other material then wood?...maybe Im not building a cabin in Mexico?..

With a background of 25+ years of hands-on work in many types of construction, having contractor's licenses and journeyman certification in 2 states, and working in professional architectural/design offices for almost 20 years designing and producing plan sets for residential, industrial, and commercial construction, since moving here I have seen a lot of inappropriate materials and construction practices. Yes, it was a presumption on my part to second guess that someone without much construction background might not have the expected outcome here. I am going back into my cave now.

Joined the Carpenters Union in '68, quit in'75 to move north. I've built in Alaska, California, Oregon and my former home State of Idaho. Without humor and a willingness to compromise you are in for a hard time. The locals took me to school. When I built my home here in La Manzanilla, even though in 2013 I had 45 years experience running projects, I failed to factor in a new culture, a new country, and a set way things are done. However, I learned my lessons, One of those was that it is often worth the money to hire a local contractor. Finally, as a master carpenter I have to say the local help leaves a lot to desire. Masons are common, nail bangers, not so much. If you would like to talk look me up. Most folks know where rojo lives, Verde casa on Concha. rojo

Eight years ago, after a three day workshop and help from a friend who had a little bit of experience, we managed to successfully construct an adobe dwelling which wasn’t the norm here at all. No local contractor could have helped me in this endeavor except for a few locals in Los Ingenios who still make clay ovens and where I found two ladies who knew how to plaster the inside of the adobe with clay. It still stands with no problems and even survived Hurricane Patricia, losing only a few palm fronds off the palapa.

Retired but always learning still. I was introduced to a Mexican contractor at the Ferrepacifico in Melaque. This gentleman spent time in residential building in California. He wanted to try US building materials here. He took us to see his project located just outside Barra. It was in a secluded location, not a part of the pueblo. It was quaint and from what I saw, the guy hit a homerun with the knowledge he had from CA,utilizing it here on that project. He also took us to another casa he built, a circular affair, located along the highway nearby also. Bottom line is, in my opinion, he knows what he's doing. He knows where to get the material, pretty sure it was all in Barra. I was impressed. Unfortunately, I can't recall his name. One of the staff working at Ferrepacifico introduced us. It was this fellows friend and the builder spoke fluent English. We talked a bit. Hope this helps

I am not sure if he is still doing that type of work. He has a 2 story garage and rental across from his main house that he made completely out of coconut wood. All of the siding is also coconut shingels, it is rather nice and has held up for a number of years. Good luck!
