Joined the Carpenters Union in '68, quit in'75 to move north. I've built in Alaska, California, Oregon and my former home State of Idaho.
Without humor and a willingness to compromise you are in for a hard time. The locals took me to school. When I built my home here in La Manzanilla, even though in 2013 I had 45 years experience running projects, I failed to factor in a new culture, a new country, and a set way things are done. However, I learned my lessons, One of those was that it is often worth the money to hire a local contractor.
Finally, as a master carpenter I have to say the local help leaves a lot to desire. Masons are common, nail bangers, not so much. If you would like to talk look me up. Most folks know where rojo lives, Verde casa on Concha. rojo
