RP, I had that problem to start with. I then held the shield in the up position and place the hook in the slot. I then lowered the shield slowly and this enabled the hook to engage and ultimately lock into the correct position.

I think these release clips are bloody marvellous, possibly one of the best ideas to hit the surfcasting scene for a very long time.
