Interesting call from my brother this morning. The locals at Kairakau are plotting revenge on the Trawlers that are vacuuming up everything between the shore and the islands. (thats inside 600m from shore for people who don't know the place)
Apparently Dep't of Fish say its perfectly legal.

Locals went out and spoke to the trawler guys, who's response was along the lines of "we'll fish in the damn lagoon if we feel like it".

Prepare for war commercial assholes!

To give you an idea how close that is.

On the upside, at least until the trawlers turn it into a desert, the locals have already caught a few shoalie snapper around the islands.

Wank**rs. Thats my closest beach as well. I wouldnt mind betting theres a few spawning snapper in there too. Let the home made reef building begin.

The residents will try the official complaint route first (so they can say they did it) then when that fails they no doubt will deal with it themselves.
Old rolled up wire fences and scrap metal is really good at wrecking trawler nets.

Are they actually dragging nets inside the island? What are they arfter doggies or gurnard?

Gurnard and Lemons are usually plentiful inside the islands. I'm guessing that's what they're after.

Im as against commercial pillaging as anyonw here, but is the answer dumping wire and metal in our ocean?

or you could claim to have seen a maui dolphin, that took care of the commercial fisheries in taranaki, unfortunately i think the fisherman here were environmentally responsible!!!

Im sure wire and metal would be a lot less harmfull than bottom trawling and wiping out the entire fish stock. How about a series of concrete blocks with a metre or so of metal reinforcing sticking vertically upwards. Tear the nets and create a little reef at the same time. How green is that

I'm with you all. The whole commercial fishery thing is out of control and unfortunately we have another lame Government in charge. It will take a major incident to wake some of the up. They have a complacency beyond reproach.

I'm surprised they are risking trawling there anyway. So much rubbish (including whole caravans) went out to sea during the big flood the bottom must surely be already littered with junk.

They need to do this via the media. Look what happened when the NZ Herald got hold of the Korean fishing boats story.
Once it gets publicised the rest of the media (TV as well) will start sniffing around and phoning various politicians for comment.

I've told them they should photograph or video the boats and send it to the media

Sadly, if the stories in the Fishing News are any indicator, Minister Heatley appears to have little interest in the rights of recreational fisherman. Good on those who go through the official channels though. Good luck.
There's a saying parliament that best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own wrist.

. Not quite sure what there on about there. Personally I prefer the saying "if you want something done right do it yourself". Just don't use explosives.

If someone could video them trawling this close, that could be useful. I remember someone at Whakaki telling me about a trawler than came in real close there once. The scumbag crew were giving surfcasters the fingers as they trawled past. A clip of that could go viral on youtube, get picked up by the media. Maybe I'm dreaming, but it's worth thinking about. Lots of video capable cameras around these days.

They were the ones who made the fuss about the trawlers second time around and really pushed it in the media. I have the phone number of Scott MacIndoe if you want to chat with him direct.

The way to make it noticed is make it a big issue. Legasea is growing in support and often push this via their Facebook page and it gets shared and suddenly its noticed even more.

Reef Balls and Razor wire. Sounds like a good title for an article for the local rag. Mmmmmmmmmmmm Race can you send me a couple of pics (trawler or not) and a brief on the actions of the trawlers. Registration numbers or boat names look good in these articals.
Maybe I can get the ball rolling.

Thank you for supporting the petition to stop foreign charter vessels abusing our seas and their crews.

The great news is that in less than 24 hours we had over 1,000 people sign the petition.

However, we are still 3,230 people away from reaching what we thought was a pretty modest target of 5,000 caring Kiwi’s.

We can still get there, but it entirely relies on you to promote this petition.

Ways you can do this are:

1. Publish the link on any social media sites such as facebook that you are involved in. Even if you have done this already, now might be a great time for a follow up post with a personal message asking your friends to take 30 seconds to sign it!

2. Fire off a quick email to your contacts asking them to get behind this – for your sake as well as theirs.

3. Posts topics/comments on fishing related websites/forums

LegaSea is working hard on your behalf to become a movement that forever protects Kiwi’s rights to well managed fish stocks. We rely hugely on volunteer hours as well as some carefully selected and modestly paid contractors to get things done.

Unfortunately we are not able to commit big bucks to get a strong PR/marketing campaign behind this petition so we rely on passionate people like you to spread the word and offer support in any way you can.

As a side note, being inshore vessels, are these Kiwi trawlers? Their reaction might be what it is because they are trying to survive. I'm not condoning it, just trying to make sense of it. I've been witness to it myself for many years. I'm thinking that with the likes of Legasea, and small pockets of individuals, we as not just recreational fishermen, but as New Zealanders are finally standing up and saying NO MORE! That kinda gives me warm fuzzies.

They are local trawlers I believe. Well, smallish ones, not big factory ships. The rec fishermen out there have no problem at all with the commercial guys making a living, its just where and how they choose to do it. And also their attitude that they deserve rights over and above rec fishermen because they pay for quota.

It seems the commercial sector are in a 'take what you can get before someone else gets it' mode.

Maybe they have depleted their offshore stocks to a point where they need to come inshore and plunder whatever is left..

Awesome guys. Racepics....yeah, I believe you are right. The offshore stocks are beginning to dwindle, but most, in fact NEARLY all NZ crewed vessels are now fishing inshore only. The offshore trawling is almost exclusively done by foreign crewed vessels chartered by NZ owned companies.

It really is a vicious cycle. And the attitudes of many need to change to make this work. It has to come down to sustainability vs economics, and right now economics has a firm upper hand.

This story made the local rag. 3 trawlers have been mercilessly hammering Kairakau down to Pourere. Interestingly the lack of fish has nothing to do with the incessant trawling. According to Hawkes Bay Seafoods Nino D"Eposito its this fellas fault.

He was the only seal Ive seen at Kairakau. Apparently there are hundreds of them hammering the fishery. Could someone please go and measure Mr D"Eposito nose. I think he might want to change his name to Pinnochio. Can you believe it. Exploding seal population my a**se

There have always been a few seals on the islands at Kairakau. But there won't be once the trawlers have wiped out the fish..
