Tested Tackle Tips.

Over the half a century plus I have been drawn to the beach I have received many tried and tested tips. It has become obvious there are many who joined this site to pick up on a few helpful hints to improve on their success rate.

I hope there are others who will enter into the spirit of this thread and offer a few suggestions or tips they find useful, especially to newcomers and older hands alike.

I will start the ball rolling, hopefully you will join in.

Break out sinkers. The standard BOS sinker works well but can it be improved? I believe yes. Tip one: on the top of my rod rest, secured with a piece of line, I keep an ordinary tooth brush. This proves extremely useful when the grooves the wires sit in become clogged with sand. Also the brush is good for removing any bait from the hooks at the end of a session. Tip 2: take an pair of pliers, straighten the wires and add a lumo bead, then re-curve the wire to its original shape. This has a twofold effect, First it helps secure the wires in place, secondly, the sinker will not be too far away from the baited hook and at night, if the beads are 'charged with light', they act as an attractor. Here you can see before and after.

I mentioned quite recently I like to use fine wire hooks. I managed to get a few packets of the Alan Yates hooks from the UK, these are quite deadly on gurnard, Kahawhai and pan sized snapper. I like these for their sharpness and the way they hold the point, I also like them for the long shank and the extra width in the gape. This enables a long bait such as an anchovy to be held securely whilst the bait remains in a natural shape. Also, being a wire gape hook, there is plenty of point and barb showing, frequently fish hook themselves. Finally the bait does not bunch up and crowd the gape, this can be a cause of missed takes. The picture shows two fine wire hooks alongside two Black Magic hooks. the difference in material thickness it surprising and this makes a big difference to bait presentation.

Finally, I don't like a snap off any more than the next man, tying a fresh rig on a cold evening holds little appeal. I carry several pre-made traces with me, plus the other parts required for a pulley rig. The only work required is to slide a bead and small piece of soft tube on the shock leader to protect the knot, and attach a small stainless split ring. Everything else just clips into place with the use of Tackle Tactics clips.

I keep the ready made traces, complete with bead attractors on a piece of flat, soft plastic, I think this came from an ice cream lid, then it is slipped into a polythene bag. This keeps moisture at bay and the hooks free of any oxidation, it also holds the traces nice and flat.

Instead of a tooth brush I just take a bucket and fill it with water .One dunk of the sinker has all the sand falling off . Can of course also use the same bucket for washing hands etc etc.

Some good ideas. There is nothing that annoys me more than this. See the grains of sand stuck in the grooves. Drives me nuts when I'm fishing.

I usually use a running rig but I'm I'm curious to know how people make there own pulley rigs? I have used swivels attached to the main line for the pulley to run through but the pulley line doesnt last long. Never used those proper pulley things but wonder if there any good? Any other tricks?

Easy as mate. I use black magic 80lb tough trace for the backbone and 4-8kg black magic swivels with an IMP clip and a gemini clip at opposite ends with a couple of hard lumo beads to protect the knots. Line doesn't last forever but nylon never does!!

Depending on the size of the swivel used in the pulley rig-

I use a small (5-10 mm) length of lumo tubing and insert that through the eye of the swivel that the backbone of the pulley rig will go through.
Then using hot glue I fix it into place.

Then make the pulley rig as per usual.

By coincidence I mentioned Alan Yates in the opening post. Alan is a well respected match angler who has represented his country, a well known author and television host.

This is a YouTube clip that may help new comers to understand the manufacture and workings of a pulley rig. Here it is being suggested for use on rough ground, this is what is was originally designed for, but it works well in most conditions.

My latest attempt at a poor mans cheap pulley rig using running rig stoppers from a well known shop. Not perfect and wont last forever but does the job.

Thanks for the plug with the lumo tube packaging Hangler. Those long shank hooks look like Varives Big Mouth we used to bring them in for Darrel N up the bay awesome hook we had a theory that big Snapper were less likely to bite through the hook than the trace as long as you struck the bite.
We have the been using Proper Pully clips on our own rigs for a while now, I have found them much smoother and less likely to pig tail as the line is not being pulled over a swivel.
If you are looking for a good line for backbone if you can find it I think we have left is Sufix Surf Shock Leader it's not bought into NZ any longer.

Phill, I am still waiting to hear when you have the bags for a Veritos rods in stock.

I used those wide gape hooks this afternoon, three reasonable takes all hooked themselves, very obliging. If you do hook a large fish there is no reason why it shouldn't be landed, just let the rod do the work on bringing the fish to shore, if the fish wants line then give it.

In response to a request by Jaypeegee, here are two pictures of the home-built double rod rest.

The centre shaft is from an extension window washing pole, this means the rod can be better supported in big seas. In the top of the centre shaft I keep a tooth brush on a string. This is primarily to remove sand from the channels on a BOS but it has a dozen other uses. The majority of the material is scrap aluminium and the only tools required are a hacksaw, file or good sand paper and a pop rivet gun.

The basic idea can be changed in any way to suit the individual.

No, using a bait runner reel, if a fish hooks itself it just pulls line which is the idea of the runner technique.

Right now I am looking at making a tripod, along the lines highly favoured in Europe. I believe these have advantages and disadvantages, but only experience can tell which side wins out.

I believe designing and making the extras for surfcasting adds another dimension to the joys to be had from our sport.

This is a Force 8 design, I think it has a lot of merit as the centre support can be extended to 8ft, (2.4 metres).

The tripods are not on the site but are made to order. They are far more solid than some of the UK ones .

I have been playing around trying out designs for a tripod rod rest. I had two basic requirements, first it needs to handle two rods, second it needs to be height adjustable. This afternoon I gave the prototype a test run and I must say I am very pleased with the results. It still requires a couple of small modifications and then it will be on the money.

I had to smile: the fish were somewhat reticent but crabs were not. One rod registered a long pull down and stopped in the bent position, the silly bugger had hooked itself. Now this crab was by any standards a large model and he was possibly the most unfortunate crustacean to be beached. I usually throw the damn things back but my partner, being Chinese, had an entirely different ending in mind. Another steep learning curve for me, and I have to say it tasted delicious.

Very nice looking design. I prefer my rods spaced apart but that does look very handy and stable.
I wish some one would come up with a retractable single rod composite fibre stand like that. Would be nice and easy to carry down the beach. Clunky rod stands are a bit of pain really.

Rex, if you wish to have a single rod stand, one that is retractable, very light and easy to carry, look at the Trade me $1.00 reserve auctions. Quite often you will find a heavy duty camera, or better still a movie camera tripod. These are usually aluminium and can easily be modified to take a cup for the base and a 'V' to hold the rod.
