Modified Casting Rules

I have just posted on the NZACA Website the new modified rules to be used from this date.Yes i have listened to all members and casters.The new accuracy distances are Midgets"20,30,40, Juniors"40,60,80 the rest are the same.9 June casting day at Feilding more info later.

A good fixed spool set up with .25 line and 5oz sinker will go for miles

Hi Jock well done on the accuracy distance changes.
Can I assume that the other changes are for NZACA nationals/Club days only and that for Regional"distance only" days we will revert back to the proper rules.

The new modified casting rules are for all NZACA Casting days. NZACA Casting Clinics have replaced Regional Casting Days.The proper rules written correctly are on the NZACA website.

why have we taken a step backwards?last yr i was told records could be set at regional casting and at nationals and some good distances were put down yet now that has all changed.why the .25 on all leads,and any leader you like is nothing but dangerous.now need a clear 500 meters for break offs.why can we not go with rest of the casting world? not a happy caster,cheers pete

Hi Pete, from your comments I assume that you were one of the casters NOT consulted . I agree with every thing you have said . I was told there would be a debrief after the Nats? Go the NZACA!

Hey Guys, I was the one who asked for the junior accuracy distances to be changed due to the fact that the kids were struggling to hit the 100m distance casting. Happy with the changes there.

Agree with the junior changes. Looking forward to seeing some new distance records and personal bests for the rest of us.

0.25 line should make quite a difference, particularly for the fixed spool casters.

Jock you can now auction off the coloured sinkers for NZACA funds!

The casting weights belong to Tackle Tactics supplied free of charge and replaced as they became lost or damaged. The reason for the colours was to make it easy to check the weight to match the line, simple really. I suggest casters go and buy a hard hat and some protective clothing.

The change allows fisherman to cast with there gear without requiring anything special.

And for the more serious, nothing has changed, the rules still allow the elite to do what they do best the way they want to. I always hear the saftey stuff thrown around, very few accidents have ever occurred here in NZ, everyone has bust off's, usually though mainline wrap which would effect any rule, very few bust offs are though light leaders.

I can not see why the rules neeed to be changed to suit the so called fisherman. Apart from maybe changing the leader to a safer size it is what is used by most. My 200 plus cast a Papamoa was made with an off the shelf rod and reel with a retail cost of under $400.

At the end of the day, nothing has changed for the better casters, you can still use international rules. But for the rest of us who like to throw a 5 ounce, and use what ever lines on the spool, its a more relaxed approach, not such a serious one.

The NZACA needs to build new members, as well as cater for those it has. These rules allow both the serious to stay serious, and the laxed back buggers to do just that. Lets keep it real, the safety bandwagon is getting old. It is only the top casters who get bust off's while pushing there gear to the limit, the rest hardley break 150meters. Its usually not the leaders that break, its the mainline on guide wraps............. No rule will help that, unless we change to 50lb wire...... An keep things really safe, whilst wearing googols and crash helmets, not to mention elbow pads and face paint...... Just keeping it real boys.

Chad I believe you are incorrect about the snapoffs, at the Gizzy nats there were more snapoffs made by the less experianced casters. these were caused by a number of reasons but mostly due to the operator.
In your vocation you are trained to apportion blame in cases of injury by neglegence. I wish no organizer to go through that process.
The thing about this change that gets to me most is that a number of members of the NZACA have just wasted about two years getting CASTING rules settup to as fair as possiable for all.
The UKSF based rules are a standard reconised around the world. That standard attracts sponsers which the NZACA are good at upsetting.
After only one year or less I dont beleive the UKSF rules had been given a fair go. We are now back in the darkness.

I guess it all depends on the angle you look at it from. I can see equal points both sides of the argument. It would be interesting to see what a majority thinks, but I would say, ether way Jock has his hands full, he will never please everyone.

But again, good on ya Jock for giving up allot of your time and putting it into something to help others.

I can understand the need for simple rules for club/fishing casters. Probably 95%of the national entrants are club/fishing casters and don't cast at any other event.
If an arrangement was made at these casting clinics that NZ distance records (UKSF compliant)could be set. Wouldn't this go some way to creating some middle ground? Retaining existing rules/records made set this year.While at the same time trialing a new system.

I agree Gary , something like a clubman section for the fisherman and a UKSF section which allows them to compare their casts apples for apples.
The UKSF / NZACA rules seem to have disappeared off the website altogether.

that may work ok ,how about taking the nationals back to the .30 line dia as it was,that way if you break a record it is done from good casting and hard yards and not just a smaller line dia.i am told that .30 was decided on yrs back because it made the fixed spool and free spool even.

One of the biggest draw cards and the thing that drew me to the UKSF rules was the ability to cast weights from light to heavy on matching lines . As a retailer and very part time fisherman it gives me an invaluable incite into the performance of that equipment that I both use and sell.
I believe that the UKSF rules as far as the line/weight should have experimented with far more by a lot more fisherman as I have seen some grossly overloaded rods that would have performed better with a lighter lead .

Some interesting points and some venting. I can say, with hand on heart, that these changes weren't made without a lot of consideration and discussion. The way these rules are written still allows those Elite casters to turn up at Nationals or any other NZCA sanctioned event and set World records as long as they are using the compliant "Line/Sinker ratio etc. At the same time it allows the average Joe Bloggs to cast using what he casts with each and every time he goes out fishing.
I can assure everyone that the NZACA does "NOT" set out to upset Sponsors. They are too bloody hard to get. Personally, this is the wrong forum to appoint blame re the upsetting of Sponsors. I have a phone.
As for the bust offs in Gizzy. Our club had five of the men competing and our Lady competitor have bust offs due to wind knots directly attributed to the heavy Leader. I have been casting reasonably competitively for four years and this was the first time I have had this problem and it happened twice.
Like Chad, I have confidence that there will be no more bust offs than usual. One shouldn't get drawn into the Give Way rule effect, there will be no calamitous disasters.
As the parent body, the NZACA has to be seen to listen to everyone. I am absolutely behind these changes as I was for the introduction of the new rules last year. I am passionate about all our Members being able to achieve their personal goals and I truly believe these rules open the doors for each and everyone of them. Those that wish to attain world record status and those that just want to have a chuck.

Yoey, I would like to believe that there was some sort of consultation be it very limited, there seems to be a large proportion of members who were kept in the dark.
The heavier leader didn't cause your wind knots it was a combination of things, the cross wind line not being wound onto the reel tight enough, over stressed rods, if you don't believe me check out the photos.
Sponsorship is like marriage it needs constant attention, the divorce papers arrived today.
Yoey and you other decision makers you have gone away from the fairest casting rules that are used in the rest of the world.

Its always tough when a sponsor has an interest into the running of things, but thats why we have a National body, they are there to make the big decisions.

I'll be straight up, Phill I can understand your frustration, I honestly can, not just from casting point of view, but also the time and money you have put into it, with all of the sinkers and turning up and giving allot of advice, I take my hat off to you there, its excellent. However

From a development perspective, the new rules open the event to wider variety of people. I know you don't think the system was complicated, but on the surface it was, when you got used to it, well it was allot easier to understand but it still left me wondering a few things. I could not see the point of using such a heavy leader. I can't break 30lb line, let alone 100lb line. I know the whole safety routine, but it seemed extreme.

The new rules are very broad. They are there to assist everyone and make the event allot more simple. For the top guys like yourself/Neil/ GW/Peter ect..... You guys are un-effected, nothing changes at all. You still go about business as you would, you still compete for records in the same fashion you usually would, not a single element has changed for you. So how can this be a bad thing?? It is in the best interest of everyone. For the serious, things remain the same, for those of us who are not worm catches, rules also suit us and make the event more enjoyable. WE ALL WIN?

The only change to the rules that has changed is guys like me, who don't take casting that serious, these rules allow us to use our fishing gear without the fair of our line thickness failing or falling short, it allows us to dust off our sinkers without worrying about it's weight, we don't have to think, we just rock up and have a crack with the exact same gear we use all year round. How easy it that? How appealing to people is that? Very few questions asked, just go and have a crack bro. This was clearly what joe public was after. I hated casting with a .75mm leader, I never use that, why would I want to, just to have a cast on grass, allot of people complained about this. Simple answer, relax the rule, allow the bulk of people to wing it, don't allow them any accolades apart from them improving themselves which is all most of us want to do. Get a gauge of how we are casting. We are still there to compete, but its just a much more relaxed environment.

Pete, your completely right about the line weight (mainline). The only issue I can see with the new rules is at a Nationals, a cheeky bugger like me using .25mm line and a 5 ounch sinker throwing a .40mm leader gets a cast right and wins the event over top boys using the international rules. Casting that lighter line and leader would give me another 15 metres. So I would agree that .30mm is a middle ground that has always been there and perhaps should remain. But to be honest pete, you guys are worlds ahead of the rest of us. Anyone who is a decent caster, would be silly not to use International rules as there is always a chance at a record. You guys cast allot more than the rest of us, so it means allot more to you than the rest of us. I just think that you guys need to remember that most of us are there for the fishing. I really enjoy the casting don't get me wrong, its a good feeling and it was a choice event this year, but keep it simple. I enjoyed watching Gary W cast, and Neil step up to try and knock em off, it was exciting as it unfolded, none of that will change, nor will your mid year casting days which only the serious attend, and only the best go to with the purpose of strictly casting in mind. On these events, even with the new rules, you elite events will not change.....

From a novice casting perspective, I think these rules will include more people, and capture a wider audience. I don't think it is taking a step back, I see it as a step forward, a step at trying to get more involved and putting things into the right direction.

Chad I also understand were you guys are coming from, but I believe the leader issue was just playing with your head.
As I said before my 200mtr cast was done with fishing gear as I had forgotten my casting rod ( life moves in mysterious ways) but the trick was not to overload the rod.
For you and others who missed the casting days they were not just setup for the elite ,we all help each other out , everyone was welcome and I think everyone had a great day.
I was just thinking If I can crack 200 with heavy leader if I can drop it back to 15kg 250mtrs could be possible but it would mean nothing.
Or we just might take a break for a few years.

I love controversy, I love it when people are offering their perspective, preferable from a 180 degree opposite angle, this is what message boards are all about.

From a personal point of view, I have never understood what distance casting has got to do with surfcasting. I prefer to put a sinker to the zone where I believe the fish are feeding, and always with a bait attached.

When casting competitions copy their fly fishing brothers and have a trace attached, akin to a leader, plus a simulated fly, only then will I take any notice of the results. A casting competition should have something that simulates the shape, size and additional weight of a bait, and only then should it be used as an advert for sales, just casting a bare weight means nothing to me.

As for the NZACA. Again, speaking only for myself, I would love to see their efforts put into gaining the anglers who don't belong to their association. I believe this would serve to make them a body that truly represents all anglers, which at present it doesn't.

I appreciate this post will attract condemnation, so what's new? I will confess I am long past taking any notice of critique, I tell things like they are, and in this instance I have mentioned how many feel when trying to associate distance casting with actual fishing.

I have never purchased a rod because someone has managed to cast a long distance, I purchase all my fishing gear because it feels comfortable to my needs, skills and style. The satisfaction someone gains from casting a personal best probably matches the way I feel when I land a nice fat Kahawhai or similar.

Fishing is a funny old game, and the longer I have been involved with it, now some fifty-eight years, (I started when I was twelve) the funnier it gets.

I remember a long deceased angler called Wally Hale. He stood up at a very serious and well supported meeting of highly skilled anglers. He put forward the proposition angling has moved too far toward the callisthenics of casting and lost sight of actual fishing. His proposition was passed unanimously.

At a guess that meeting was forty-five years ago, I believe Wally was well ahead of his time.

That was an exceptional cast, no doubt there. But you took an ordinary rod that day and "pimped" it up. From my understanding, that so called fishing rod had .25mm line, .45mm leader, so your set was run to the letter of the laws and fine tuned, which is great. But for the rest of us, again who just want to have a crack, very few of us use a 3 ounce sinker, we use 5's. We don't run .45mm leaders. We just keep it simple. Sometimes the leader is .43mm sometimes its .55mm just what evers sitting on the self that was surplus from another occasion. You may have even had a big tail wind that day, who knows....... Still a great cast with the gear you had, but, again it was run to the letter of the laws. That cast was also an off the ground cast, Phill you are regarded as one of the best in NZ at that, how many off the ground casters were there at the Nationals? Most just thump the rod over and wing it, no complications.

You guys are great when it comes to welcoming people to the casting events, but again, most of us just go fishing, we take the advice once a year on the casting day at a nationals and just have a crack and hope to better ourselves. Well over 100 people at the Nationals. maybe 5 in the running for top casting realistically. Majority just want to fish, and do the casting for a bit of fun, these rules make it fun and keeps it simple. Thats appealing.

The leader rules were designed a long time ago to lessen the amount of crack offs when the more powerful casts are being used .

The likes of a otg or pendulum cast has the lead traveling around the caster rather then a arc over the top so there is a danger that the lead could head off down the beach .
It was carried over into the casting world for the same reasons and also after a cast or two the leader knot may have been slammed into the ground possibly weakening it so theres a good safety margin built in.

I use 70 to 80 lb on the field and 40 to 50lb on the fishing gear .

A freespool caster will also get greater distance from using .25 line as there will be less x wind drag and the weight of the trailing line is also lesser .

Hangler, there is an accuracy cast at 100m 80m and 60m, which is with a simulated bait, as a fixed running rig, the bait is measured from the pin. There are some good points in your post. Gaining momentum in gaining more numbers in the NZACA is a must from here on for it to continue. I would love to see that happen, but it has a long way to go, and a large mountain to climb

Theres also records for distance with bait.

Its about seeing how far you can push both your gear and your technique.

Having the ability to crack out a big cast is just another tool to be used if the situation requires it .

When I was a small boy I must have hung out with competitive bunch of guys , girls were not allowed to play with us ( that came later) but anyway competition started early by seeing who could pee up a lamppost the highest who could ride their bike down the steepest hill, that carried on with cars .
If I wanted to be good at something I would compete with the best in that given activity . I was rewarded with championships lap records etc.
Hangler the relationship between distance casting and fishing is based around that lamppost from earlier . If you can cast 150mtrs and the fish are in at 50m you have it covered but if you reverse that you are in trouble.
As far as rods go there has been a lot of high end rods sold up your way that could be way to much rod for the owners but if they choose to go to a casting day their learning curve would be much faster.

Chad that rod was just my fishing rod straight of the shelf the reel was a Tica Dolphin I bought on special line was .28 Duraflex a 15/50 ultima .65 taper leader and a 100gm lead.
The rod had been thrashed by every man and his dog. (The modification to the rod came later when Neil turned into a 6 piece rod , much easier to get into your vehicle.)
The number of OTG casters at the Nats I believe was more than in past years. Good to see.
As far as the number of 3oz breakouts go they must be fairly popular as we manufacture and sell several thousand every year.
The lighter leads have become more popular because of the thinner line available now and rods that do a bit more casting for you.

on a lighter note ,off for a fish shortly,will take my fishing gear set up thus being 222 ,egg beater,braid mainline ,braid leader.this is my fishing set up why can i not cast with my fishing gear at the nats? cheers all and have a nice day.

Have another think about your statements Hangler. You must agree that improving your casting accuracy and distance will equate to better fishing results.
If your fish are 20m out you dont need a rod at all.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!

Good point Pete , I also fish with braid I have sold a lot more braid this year to surf casters . Diawa have braid aimed and
marketed to Surfcasting.
Chad you said these new rules were to bring more fisherman into NZACA and make it easier to compete with the fishing gear you normally use, but exclude braid, WHY?

Your rules from the start got rid of all braid shockleaders due to bust offs Phill so can't understand why your saying anything about it. You could use braid main line if you wanted as its not ommitted but you would still have to use the right diameter .25 or larger which would negate the reason for using braid. High strength, low diameter.

No excuses, just get out there!!

Main line : The main (running) line must not have a thickness of less than 0.25mm and not be of braid. This is for all casting weights

Leader : Must be strong enough for the individual Casters ability and should be of high visibility. The Caster is responsible for his/her break-off and safety of other Casters. No braid leaders allowed.

You are both missing the point that Pete and myself are trying to make. It has been stated JUST ROCK UP WITH YOUR FISHING GEAR so why no braid for main line or leader as its becoming more popular.

Completely off the subject but Hangler, just what do you know of the NZACA. You seem happy to throw stones as such. Who dont we represent. I mean we have Boaties, kayakers, Jetskiers, LBG fishers, Trout fishers and the Distance casting body, all as part of our Association. We are also in talks with the NZSFC. Actually sitting around the same table, something that was unthinkable even five years ago, formulating a way forward together to, firstly protect the fishery you well enjoy, secondly to protect your right to enjoy that fishery and also to promote the sport of fishing in New Zealand. With due respect get over the misconception that we sit on our backsides and are doing nothing.Where do you get the impression that we are not looking to target other areas. I'm there, I saw issues and I stood up. I have to be honest and say I am getting a little fed up with the shallow and constant attacks on the NZACA by those who have no idea with what is actually achieved on your behalf and by that I mean all fishermen and women by this group. Many miles travelled by Exec members to represent you, as a fisherman at many meetings around the country. North and South Island. Hours sitting, argueing the protection of the fishery, discussing the rights of you and me.The changes have been huge in the last two years. I've heard it all Mate but most of it is way off the mark. Stop pointing the finger, you have no right.

well guys fishing went well and no break offs with braid all the way.home with 7 snaps,best right on 3 kgs with 3 other over 2 kgs.put back small kingi and 2 other snaps.funny thing guy next to me landed ky only.yet some say extra distance is no advantage
