Crab Snare

My first DIY crab snare, yeah boi! Will give it a go at shark alley when the weather calms I reckon.
Anyone else used these before?

Got some alloy mesh from my mate and thought I'd try and make one, took it out for a casting session in pilot bay today and its awesome, a lazy 50m cast is all that's needed.
The ocean swell is far too massive to give it a decent attempt at the moment.

Anglers tend to think Napier has a crab problem, boy that beach must be alive with them. Good idea, pity the clip doesn't show how to bait the lure or the principal of just how it works.

BOP, Have you tried the crab snare yet? I for one would be very interested in reading how this works for you.

Went to Rabbit Island in the weekend where I know there are constant crabs and gave it a go.
Could see them pulling on the line and a number of times a big strike as if snared up but then let go.
Im using 80lb mono for the snares and think this is far too heavy so I'll cut them off and give 40lb a go this weekend.

One of the YouTube clips suggests not striking at the take and use a slow retrieve without pumping the rod. It doesn't explain why but I would guess either action, especially in a choppy sea could break the leg off that has been snared.

Just a thought.

Tried for kahawai at Kaituna last night and got harassed by crabs... perfect!
Got a massive one on the 80lb snares then changed to 40lb and got lots of little ones. IT WORKS! Thanks for the slow retrieve advice Hangler.
And get this, I took the crabs to Rogers Rd for bait and pulled in my largest fish to date, a 1.5m Lemonfish which I reckon must have been close to 20kg! Stoked
Love it when a plan comes together, oh and I let her go after a few crappy cell phone pics.
Can you eat lemons this large or is it not recommended? Has anyone on this forum prepared such a large fish for the freezer?

Mate lemons are yum as. My wife would rather eat lemons than snapper. Keep trying the crabs as bait those big snapps love them to.

BOP, I totally agree with the previous post, I think you will find lemons to be as good as most fish we catch. However, this comes with a condition, you must deal to them as soon as possible, preferably within minutes of landing.

Most members of the shark and ray family will release an ammonia-like substance when they become distressed, this can totally ruin the flesh. The best way to stop this happening is to remove all the fins and the tail, then cut down to the backbone cartilage at the vent, then turn the blade so it is facing forward, now cut toward the gills. Now turn the blade down to remove the head. This will automatically remove the head, the gut cavity and the contents.

Now give the trunk a good wash in salt water and what you have is magnificent eating.

By the way, congratulations on landing such a good fish and I am pleased the experiment with the crab snare paid dividends. It's tips and information such as this which forms the very backbone of this site, thanks for sharing.

Great when a plan comes together welldone and nice fish. Like Hangler said trunk em, rinse them thoroughly and ice em straight away. Very nice eating white flesh, even had some friday night after catching a couple of large ones thursday evening. There so underrated it staggers me, fighting wise and eating, probably the most fun fish to catch from the surf.

I have made plenty of snares from old break away sinkers. remove the old brekaway wire and then use 15kg line to make good sized sliding loops throught the old wire holes in sinker then open up the eye of the top attachment wire and slide on two 6 to 7/0 hooks and then close wire up again. bait up and cast leave for five minutes and then slow wined in always works.

This is my home made snare i carry in my bucket. works even better at night when you attach a glow stick. still waiting for a big fish to come along and swallow one of these big hooks it will happen one day. Its very basic but it works.

now that is damn good idea for breakouts that have broken wires and i just happened to have one in my tackle bag, after seeing this i grabbed it and made up a snare the snares are all improved clinch knotted to the sinker as i have no crimps but may end up getting some this week to make it a bit tidier. just working out what I can use as a bait cage so I can relegate all my mushy bait in the freezer to crab catching can also use my old surfcaster for crab catching duties with the other half being responsible for that job.

Put you old mushy bait in a peice of stocking and tie it up then just put it on the hooks mate. Im sure your other half will have some old stockings if not new stockings are good as, just dont get caught.

Decided to modify a longline clip I had hanging around to avoid having fish hooks on the shank of the sinker for safety purposes while in tackle bag so I can just clip a hook on when required and remembered the roll of muslin cloth I had laying around in a box so got that for wrapping bait in then putting it onto the hook.

Was an asian woman out the beach Sunday evening fishing for crabs.What she used was a bird nest(big tangle of nylon & she tied a fish frame in the middle of it & just cast it out.Seemed to work as was puling in paddle crabs 1 after the other.
