Beach Access eroded like the sand dunes.

The latest Hawkes Bay Regional Council newsletter is telling us that all vehicle and foot traffic is banned from all Hawkes Bay sand dunes. Vehicle access is banned on Waimarama beach from Kuku Rocks to Pouhokio Stream 8am to 8pm until April 30th.
All vehicles (includes quad bikes and motor bikes I guess) banned from Ocean Beach at all times.The DOC guys wont like this when they have to walk up to the wildlife fence and penguin cages carrying all their gear on their backs.

There are other bans too for East Clive, Mahia, Aromoana and Blackhead Point.

Reading on I find a piece on Ngaruroro/Tukituki wetlands. Recant plantings have made a noticable improvement, strengthening their resolve to keep vehicles out.
Fishing is allowed on this reserved beach but you must carry your gear in.
Isnt that nice of them? Did they think they would be able to stop us from fishing there? Their time might be better spent putting in some decent roading so that everyone can enjoy the area.

I would be calling an urgent meeting with the council , as a rate payer and as a beach user you should have had the right of conciltation. Get hold of the parks and reserve CEO and push until you get a meeting . You could try selling yourself as a club as a honorary fisheries officers/ beach warden . This is the thin edge of the wedge, don't let them get away with it.

Chris maybe you could submit a letter on behalf of the club opposing this?. It should be brought to the club wed nite. Whos going to police it?.

Just re read SAND DUNES "Stay off all sand dunes , whether you're on a motorbike or vehicle, or even on foot" Even the title says "Drivers must take care when driving on our beaches, and watch out for all beach users, children, and animals". Sounds just like Wellingtons NO SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES. A reccomendation rather than an enforcement.

Yoey has rang the council and put up there response on his facebook page. I dont think this is new. Some of it is a bit vague though. I always understood the idea was to protect the populated areas of the beaches from idiots screaming through them with vehicles, rather than fishermen heading in the opposite direction to fish in such areas as ocean. The thing that annoys me is that your servants the council don't consult local fishing groups before they act. Maybe they don't know we exist.

Rex they don't consult the public at all, for anything. They seem to think they have a mandate to do as they please without notice.
They see a few families playing and swimming on the beach right in front of the car park and assume thats what all 'beach goers' do and those people are all who need to be considered.
What about the fishermen? What about the surfers?
I guess we're a minority.
Ocean beach is a great public resource for this area. I bet they have no idea how much money is spent in local Tackle shops, and water-sports retailers with ocean beach as one of the the intended 'play grounds'.
It would be in retailers interest to become proactive in keeping these areas open as well.
Go out there on a public holiday and count the kontikis/seahorses, quads, surfers, fishermen etc..

I could perhaps be called a conspiracy nutter, but these new regulations would make Andy Lowes 9km of beach frontage a lot more secluded and private .

I think Ocean is status quo. Whakaki I'm not so confident about. I wonder if a submission is needed.

Regarding Ocean Beach. I have spoken to the Regional Council, who actually have no control over Ocean Beach, and they along with the Hastings District Council confirmed that it is status quo regarding access. All they ask is that we respect the dunes and other beach users but we're fishermen and do that anyway. I will also add that this was another case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing.

Yes, great news - in which lies the answer that as long as these officials keep confusing each other and conflicting each other's policies and judgements, our right to access these areas responsibly is relatively safe. The very real danger though is the inevitability that one day they will develop into multi-cell organisms with an capability to organise their siht.
