More rod advice needed

Ok The fin-nor powerlite is dead after it got a split right through the blank in the bottom ferrule in the mid section after it creeped forward during casting and I never noticed till I heard a loud crack on the last cast with it, now it was a 14'6" which was my go to rod for west coast surf where I do use up to 5oz sinkers which was slightly over the cast weight limit for the fin-nor. my choices so far is listed below based on the reduced prices being offered through trademe at present that I do not have to layby it will either be holding my shimano ultegra or the penn 850ssm

Penn prevail 14'6" 10-15kg and up to 4oz cast weight
Abu surfline 14'6" 8-15kg and upto 200gm cast weight
Fin-nor offshore 10-15kg up to 6oz cast weight

I just need some opinions or further opinion as I do remember it being mentioned in a previous thread of mine that the 14'6" prevail does not cast as good as the 13 foot prevail that I bought which is what I bought to use for the east coast.

Why cant you use your 13ft rod on west coast beaches?
You can purchase rod holder extenders here that will lift your rod to the length of about 14'6.

I just prefer to use 14ft plus on the west coast and I also prefer to be casting 5-6 ounces of lead in areas with strong currents.

Please don't take to much notice of cast weights on rods . They are often overstated. Have you concidered a CD XD Surf 14ft. Buying from Trademe on price is probably not the best way to purchase a new rod.

Phil I just do not have the time to get into a tackle shop based on my work hours and neither are they kind enough to be open after 2pm on a saturday when I get to knock off early so if I want gear I have to buy online.

Fin-nor, like you I prefer a longer rod, my favourite is 14-6inches. I find this very sensitive to even the smallest take, whilst the extra length allows a nice strength sapping action when playing a larger fish. The rod also absorbs sudden lunges from a playful fish.

I fish the east coast and generally I can get away with 3 or 4 ounce sinkers, many times without grips. Not sure I could handle your side of the island, it may be a bit much for an old timer like me.

Those 3 rods I listed were being offered at a heavily reduced price (obviously on clearance) and my opportunity of getting myself higher end fishing gear that I have always wanted and always out of my reach. Whenever online retailers offer layby facilities like the complete angler did with my prevail I definitely jump at the opportunity. hopefully I am rained off again tomorrow so I can go and look at the local shops as soon as work lets me head off for the day.

If you would consider a second hand rod, I have a Sonik SK3 that is for fixed spool reels that I don't use. I think it is 13'6" and rated 4 - 6oz cast weight.May be too short but let me know. I am in wellington and am happy to ship it.

It is in OK condition and I can email photos if you're interested.

me and a mate both have Abu Surflines and think they are great rods. Just a really nice action and constructed well. That would be my vote for the price, although I haven't tried the other 2 two

I agree the Surfline is a great rod, fashioned off the good old Solaris which I believe is going to be make a reappearance. But if you are looking for a rugged rod the XD Surf would be my choice.
Another option could be the ABU Veritas Karen has a special on them at the moment.

Decision made found that my boss had finally reimbursed some costs I had to pay out for to upgrade my truck license and with being rained off today I got a chance to go to a shop on the way home from work and ended up walking out with a veritas 2.0

I got a chance to put the veritas together today and first thing I found was the ferrules are rather tight to put together and have to wrestle with it to pull it apart. also when putting it together the female end of the join does not go right up to the binding at the top of the male end of the joiners, is this normal or does it need to go back to the shop to get it sorted out before I use it as I have never experienced this before with rods I have owned in the past..

fin-nor, as much as it will upset some posters on this site, the Veritas rod has a history of having problems with the ferrules, in the past there have been several threads on this site based on this subject. Some people love them, whilst others don't.

Because I have dared to make such an opinion known, I will now be the subject of much abuse. This is perfectly normal, but I speak with experience: I owned two of the early models and was very happy when I replaced them. Sorry, this is probably not what you wish to read, but honest questions deserve honest answers.

You may form your own opinion based on whether you should have to return the rod to the shop before it has even tasted salt water.

No worries Hangler, I should have said in the previous post it gets about 10mm away from that bit of binding before it goes no further have tried some graphite powder that I use for reloading ammunition for my rifle to lubricate the ferrules but that did not make it any easier getting it together and pulling it apart I just don't want to go using it if it is not right as I invested too much money in the rod to go buggering it. Maybe I should have got the guy to unpackage the rod properly and assemble it for me before taking it away.

Finnor don't panic. These rods are quite tight to put together. This should have been explained to you when you purchased the rod. The sections DO NOT BUTT HARD UP TO EACH OTHER THERE SHOULD BE A GAP. If you had purchased it from our site I would be 100% sure that the fitting would be correct . If you are unsure take it back and try some others. I am assuming it is a LR model.

It is not the model with the low rider guides the guy said that the veritas 2.0 is the latest model after the LR model and it has the larger SiC guides. Thanks for clearing up my concern about the tight fit of the ferrules I am used to having rods that the sections butt hard up against each other and now that I know that this is not the case with the veritas I am now happy to take it out fishing knowing that it is in fact correctly put together , I was originally going to buy through you and when I got told to go home for the day by the boss I thought here is my chance to get a new rod without having to wait for the courier to drop it off.

I had the same concerns when I brought my Veritas but I have had no problems. They do not butt right up to each other and to start with were very tight but it has come right now

I too am surprised to hear there has been an upgrade to the Veritas low rider guide rods, I am pretty confident Gary Kemsley has not mentioned there is a new Veritas rod on the market and he should know.

In all fairness many shops are discounting the low rider guide models, for what reason I am not going to guess. I am in my senior years and my seventy-two-year-old-eyesight is not all it used to be.

When I fished with Veritas rods, the rods being white gave me problems seeing them, especially when the sun was behind the rod. This is not being a pedant, I find a dark rod, with a white section between the top two rings for night fishing, far easier to see.

This is a personal point of view, younger anglers with far better eyes than mine may not have this problem.

More on this I did some research today in other words I made a phone call. The skinny on the Veritas is that there is not 2.0 version of the rod . The Lowrider version is the latest and greatest. You have to take your hat off to the salesman to come up with a pitch like that. Hangler I know you hate the Veritas but many love them. You should also know that at this time of year many shops try to move on any stock they have had for a while as they will be receiving their new season indents.
There is still a little resistance to the Lowriders by most who have never tried them. The most important point to remember is the reliability when casting.

Intersting to see the original Veritas in a bag. Its about time. Hangler, I am no longer working for Pure Fishing so have lost touch with the progresion of the rods. As far as I am aware the Veritas with the LR guides is the latest model. There were some problems with the earliest Veritas fitting too tight but I think that was solved with later deliveries. If you have any problems at all take the rod back and demand that they send it to Pure Fishing. Obviously the salesman cannot be trusted

Phill, I find your comment I hate Veritas rods to be quite strange. My critique toward the rod was based on personal experience, not on what others may think. I bought two of them and from day one I experienced problems, not least the failure of a manufacturer, retailing a rod close to $300.00, to have tested them to discover any underlying faults.

There have been numerous threads on this site making known complaints, the poor fitting of ferrules was common place. I had an issue along similar lines, one of the rods I purchased had loose fitting ferrules, and I was forever having to straighten the rod because the rings were no longer in line.

A manufacturer should have had the ferrule problem sorted out well before the rod's release, even now, after what I would guess to be three years, these rods are still being sold with the same problem. I recall you [Phill] fully agreeing with me these rods should have been supplied with a rod bag, from memory you went so far as to get some made.

With regard to the rod fin-now has purchased, it begs a couple of questions: (a) why was it necessary for the salesman to lie. (b) why is it after all this time, ABU still haven't got the ferrule problem sorted, it's hardly rocket science.

I look after my gear, it cost far too much money not to. In the year I owned those rods I had four broken eyes, although I accept breaking the tip eye was my own fault. The eyes have a really thin ceramic insert, and whilst this looks good, its strength is highly questionable. I returned the rods to 'Rivers and Ranges' in Hastings, the company I purchased them from, in their repairs rack was another Veritas with exactly the same complaint. The coincidence was too much, so I asked the assistant was this a regular happening? He replied, "All too frequently."

I can understand why anglers support the rod, especially if long casting is their scene and they are happy with the results. In the year I owned two of them I can say I was not happy with them, and got rid of them on TradeMe for $100.00 each. However, the story didn't stop there, I decided I would try an Okuma rod, and I have to say that rod is one of the best, value for money rods, I have ever owned.

The rod at 15ft is slightly longer than the Veritas, it has an admirable soft action, casts beautifully, bite detection is exceptional and it's ability to handle really large fish and absorb sudden runs is all I could ask for. There is a video on YouTube of me having a twenty-nine minute battle with a very large ray, I put between eighty and a hundred pounds. The rod was magnificent, it was a newly tied leader knot that finally called it quits, it hadn't had time to snug down properly. I said from the word go I would never land a fish of that size through the breakers that were running that day. The rod came complete with a rod case and retailed at $100.00 less than the Veritas. Should it snap tomorrow, it owes me nothing and without hesitation I would replace it with another Okuma model.

So far from hating the Veritas, let's just say I was a highly dissatisfied customer. One who is unafraid to speak his mind because I believe ABU stuffed up ... big time!!!

After reading your post Gary I have rang the retailer at smoko time and spoke to the guy who sold me the rod about the excessively tight fit and having to wrestle with the rod to get it apart and he is happy for me to take it back for an exchange and is happy to let me change to the LR model, he did say he usually fits the rods together before letting them out of the shop but because we were talking about trout fishing etc it slipped his mind he did say it is not the first time he has had to exchange the model veritas rods like I bought.

Well that's a good result. The LR version is a little stiffer in the middle and bottom sections but not enough to make it hard to cast. The LR guides make the rod more reliable especially in windy conditions. The extra guides make it possible to use a free spool reel. As far as the ferells being tight the not a huge problem better tight than loose .

Funny how these post start off asking fro help and end up placating Hangler.

As wholesaer of fishing rods (and other fishing stuff) I have to say that the buck stops with the wholesaler. Any problems need fixing and manufacturers need to be alerted if there is a problem in the build. For the consumer, their point of reference with the wholesaler is the retailer. They are approachable and are not out of pocket dealing with your problem. Dont sit at home for a year moaning on here. That wont get your rod fixed or replaced.
i TRY AND GET RETAILERS TO CARRY A "TRY OUT" ROD so customers can have a cast before buying. Ask around when purchasing.

Gary, with the number of threads posted on this site regards the Veritas, I am far from alone. You are correct, as far as the customer is concerned the retailer is where he should submit his concerns. However, with the length of time that particular rod has been on the market, the manufacturer would have been well aware there was a basic issue (I believe correctly fitting ferrules to be pretty fundamental) and they should have cured the fault very early in the manufacturing stage.

You will note in fin-nor's latest post, the retailer's comments: it's not the first time he has had to exchange this model. That says far more than my words.

I am very aware you also had a personal involvement in the Veritas rod. Try thinking dispassionately on how those customers may feel when they realise their hard earned cash has bought a lemon. With all the quality rods available I can think of no other brand of rod that has come in for the amount of critique on this site than the Veritas has achieved.

Once I pay my new tyres off I'll be looking at replacing these, seems to be some design imperfections coming through now they've had a little use, shame they are a nice casting rod for fishing.

The Veritas is basically a good rod , the best bang for the buck so far this century.
The quality control on these rods let them down badly and it's sad to say the distributors did not take the problem seriously at the start.
The problems with the joints were solved with the on going shipments.
The guides are of light weight construction and large shock leader knots can be hard on them .

Went and exchanged the rod this morning seeing there was no work due to foul weather conditions now have the Veritas with the low rider guides and it fits together and comes apart easily just like how I expect a rod to, good part was I got $50 handed back to me seeing they had the rod on special so used the change to buy a 300m spool of 30lb daiwa J 8 braid for the spare spool on the ultegra.

With great reluctance I have to agree with Hangler. The ferrules on the guides are indeed weak and easily broken. I know as I had at least a couple go on mine, and I had to get them replaced on a couple of occasions. In the end I cut my losses and sold it. Joining the rod was also an issue for me as well as the joins did not fit properly and frankly that wasn't acceptable either. I still have one as a spare rod even though the cap on the bottom fell off. So saying I found the Veritas a good casting rod. Was it worth the money? I dunno... I guess you get what you pay for.

It's not often a post leaves me speechless but I would never have expected that post from you, Rex. Well done for having the courage to speak up. It is only by being honest and open and being unafraid to mention faults that things get changed.

Mind you this works in two ways. I have often started threads and given a little advice on the excellent service I have had from Phill and Tackle Tactics, also the way the gear has been used to improve my fishing.

There is another anomaly. Never once since I joined this website have I ever complained about the fishing in Hawke's Bay. Last year I had a very satisfactory year, only yesterday I had a message from a fishing website in England asking when I will start videoing my fishing trips again. They have not seen fishing like it.

My wife arrived back in the country two weeks ago, and if the weather stays clement I hope to have my first expedition next week. What do I hope to catch? Simple ... anything that means I don't blank. Last year I can only recall one such day and I still got a ten minute video out of it.

The " wanna bet " was rather tongue in cheek as many on here know what I did to Phills veritas .

Phill had used the same rod a few weeks before to cast a lead 203 m. I thought I would give it a nudge and see what I could wring out of it. It was either going to go a long way or blow up. It blew up much to everyone's amusement

At the time I was casting 230m or so with my own gear.

Have broken a fair number of rods from most makers some were entirely my fault other just couldn't handle the jandal .

Tight spigots are not just a abu thing as well.

In my time in the retail side of fishing I would see broken guide from many makers . Some guides were not the best BUT most were broken by knocks rather then poor quality.

Its all a balancing act light guides make the rod feel great but are fragile compared to the stronger but heavier ones.

Both Phil and Neil have more knowledge about rods in there left thumb than I have and raise good points. So saying I can only relay what I've found from my own experience and I've done so without fear or favour.
Retailers are the ones that can send the best feedback to the manufacturers. The Veritas has the potential to be a better rod than it is currently in my opinion. But it still does the job and I know others who see m quite happy with them. That's all I would say on the subject.

Well put Neil. Just because your car can do 200kph you don't need to go that fast if you get my drift.
To put an end to this discussion the first model of the Veritas had a few issues which I brought to the attention of the distributors I believed were sorted out by the next production run. I am lead to believe that the Veritas has been one of the best selling rods in NZ over the past to years, so it is expected that there will be the problem.
Now forget about the old model Veritas with the large guides and give the new LR version a try.
KEEP an open mind, most of the knockers have never tried a rod with the Lowrider type guides, me personally have been using them for at least 10years and love them. My formost reason is the reliability of casting in the wind and not having to worry about guide wrap and cracking off.
NOTE: it is probably not a good idea to take a knife to a gun fight.

You obviously haven't seen the movie "The Magnificent Seven". James Coburn had the licking of all comers with his knife, cowboys were just dying to take him on. In the end they simply didn't see the point.

Took the veritas I had exchanged out to papamoa beach on saturday evening for a fish and quite happy with it so far even though I was only hooking sea lettuce, should have really waited till the next day to go out in the daylight to get a feel for it, only b###h I had was on my part in using an albright knot to tie the shock leader to the braid which was catching in the guides instead of taking the time to tie the leader to mainline knot I usually use which is the slim beauty knot. Really tempted to get a free spool reel to try on the veritas but for now the eggbeater will have to do.
