You can both occupy yourselves by chucking seaweed and driftwood at each other, that will occupy your time whilst you get no bites. Then when you are both buggered and collapse on the sand. Mrs Hangler can video it. Hangler you will score a crayfish or two off Gary, and you Gary will get a delicious Chinese lunch. Now what better way to spend a day on the beach. In the sunny Hawkes Bay. I would suggest fishing Rods at fifty paces on Hastings' race course, turn and then each make a genuine attempt to cast-straight the other.
Cannons should do the trick nicely but I have just surrendered my firearm's licence (true) and the neighbours would probably call in the noise control officer. Not sure a competition involving line would serve any useful purpose, I use far lighter line than Gary, far lighter sinkers also.
I might also add I am concerned about the bling, I do have a pieced ear but I could never match what Gary puts on his traces.
Sorry your food suggestion really doesn't hold water, Gary will never let on where he buys his crayfish, should some become available he would grab it for bait. I'm not sure if he has crabs or not?
My wife is an expert with Chinese buns and these are neither for display or a quick bite to the winner.
Sorry, Hardy, I don't do competitions, just simple enjoyment at whatever the catch and then watching what my wife can achieve with the humblest of fish, even an eel or a YEM.
Glad you like a bit of humor. So here is another tip. Gary just hates Red Cod. So if you can manage to catch one while you are fishing with him. He will most likely start vomiting, the moment it hits the beach. Now they are somewhat slimy, as they leave their sea water environment. And they can be quite hard to chuck. As they slip out of your hands real easy. Mitre 10 sell these real special Red Cod gloves. And wearing those you can chuck a Red Cod at least a hundred yards with a real good throw. Gary will start running as he see's you are about to biff it at him.
And when he is about half a mile up the beach. You can open his tackle bag and see what he has in there. Its a bit like Pandora's Treasure Trove. There will be so much bling I suggest you wear your sunglasses, to avoid eye strain.
Oh and you can pull his fish in for him until he gains the courage to come back.
Hardy, there are very few bad fish that come out the sea, it is usually the angler who doesn't know how to handle then cook them. I feel you are being a little unfair on Gary, kindly remember this is the man who writes fishing novels on the art of angling, with international best sellers, such as 'Ray of Sunshine', 'Spin me a Line' and his Christmas special for 2015, 'Rod Rest ye Merry Gentlemen', plus the book for teenage anglers, 'Playing Hooky'. Are you sure you got the venue right? With Sue's bangles he could be off to do the Moki Cokey, you know, putting your foot right in it then shaking it all about. This is quite acceptable as Gary has low rider rings, sadly his last bottom ring cracked. He is well known for sticking joints, plus the rather unfortunate event when his butt cap fell off, a penalty for casting on grass. I know a few anglers get stoned but not usually with necklaces and bracelets.

Can I ask wat Gary has done to you guys I have grown up reading all his books and write ups were ever I find them.I can say he knows wat he's doing and I have learnt lots from reading this article.guess that's why my wifes Bing is on my traces .I am sure on the members board pages says no abuse etc can't figure if your just jealous of how he fishes or wat . I feel we should keep this thread seemly. I started to write in keeping with Shakespeare, but I have now drifted to poetry more in line with Percy Byce Shelly. You would be forgiven for suggesting I have gone from Bard to verse.

Hangler is a clever sod. He wants to buy a brand new rod. On second thoughts he has a few. He thinks it better to buy two.
He searched the net, which got a blasting. All he found were rods for casting. Not a rod for bite detection. He thought he better change direction.
All he hoped for, just a wish. Good rods to handle larger fish. His reels both loaded with good braid. He felt the fish should be afraid.
Bait clips, sinkers, swivels too. He cast, and bid them fond adieu. Their future had been firmly mapped. The moment that the leader snapped.
He tried once more, just like a matrix. Gear supplied by Tackle Tactics. Second cast just hit the spot. He'd recalled to wet the leader knot.
He thought that he would start anew. The second effort straight and true. Thinking he was truly blessed. He placed the rods both in their rest.
Soon a rod dipped, to late, he missed. By now our Hangler was truly ... upset. So what to do, there's just one thing. The secret sparkle from Sue's bling.
The next anchovy, hook impaled. Horizon bound, where it got nailed. A fight just like a tug of war. The fish gained some, but I gained more.
My wife was really gaining traction. Capturing all this fearsome action. Deserving, surely, much reward. Perhaps, who knows, a Bafta award.
The ray, subdued upon the sand. Looked rather strange on solid land. Hangler, so pleased with his catch. The bling won through, ray met its match.
The point here may be rather mute. Use a necklace, and studs to suit. I'm sure young Sue will surely see. Her jewellery box is not for free.
Send Sue a text, perhaps a ring. And she'll supply you with the bling. Right now Sue may be right bereft. Gary went fishing, there's not much left.
The moral of this story told. That is, should I be so bold. I'll keep myself just out of reach. The'll be no meeting on the beach.
No means to challenge bling and cray. I'm happy catching tope and ray. Although you'll think it rather odd. I'd be all to pleased with a prime red cod.

Good to know that. And I can see you and Gary sitting down for a beer and chin wag? We should be discussing fishing methods, rigs, baits ,I gained so much from post days gone by .now days there not much going on .would love to hear the catch reports when and where.but no ones seams to post that sort of stuff any more .is it because you come on the site and you need to scroll through all this sort of stuff ?
The surfcasting season is only just starting. It is predominantly a warm weather sport, the winter months are generally spent scratching to get a fish.
There have been a few nice fish landed already and the signs are looking good for the coming weeks.
I have put several threads on here about rigs, also how to make a tripod rod rest, in my opinion far superior to a beach spike. I have also made suggestions for keeping rigs, stopping them from tangling in you bag. I have also shown how to build a robust tackle box that can be used as a seat.
In the season I regularly post videos on YouTube, my next video project will be shot on the beach showing a three hook clipped down rig for stability when casting. The important part about this venture will be all the necessary requirements are available from Tackle Tactics.
For your information Gary and I are good mates. I often wind him up, cause he needs it lol. I have all of his books, all signed, Gary is a fishing legend. I even sent him some alluvial gold from the days when I was a gold prospector and under water gold dredger. I have eaten at his table and stayed at his house. His daughter and her husband stayed at my place on their epic South Island Cycle ride.
He was the CEO of Team Alty that won the Team Event. inaugural World Kahawai Fishing Comp at Papamoa several years ago. I am Trevor Alty and I organized the team and was part of the Team.

Need I go further. When I arrived in Napier after the Comp, in my motor home. Staying at a motor camp at Lequaine Road, I was visited by Sue, thats Garys wife and her daughter who bought me pikelets with cream and jam on.

Trev, it was good fun, I haven't enjoyed an exchange like that for a very long time. I said at the beginning the idea was brilliant and so it turned out to be.
Sorry my latest poem was so long, you shouldn't be such a hard taskmaster. I suppose a site for surf casting is bound to lack humour, so perhaps our exchange was a little out of place. You might let us know what Sue and Gary's reaction has been, of course only if it's printable.
