Sustainable Fishing.

Country Calendar tonight had an interesting episode about a possible, new sustainable commercial method.

An extremely well put together program, one that exploded a few myths about the catch taken by commercials from Napier. Whilst anglers complain they cannot catch a gurnard from the beach, torpedo anglers are saying much the same, interesting how this commercial needs to travel nine miles out before he can catch enough for his customers. It should be noted he supplies private customers he is not part of a commercial co-operative.

What was of even more interest was to discover technology now exists that can identify the specie, estimate its size and release it from the cod end if the fish is of no commercial benefit.

Yes I thought it was well done. Certainly something that in the future could see a more sustainable fishery. But nine miles out to catch a fish that was once common on HB beaches really says that something needs to be done now. Or is it too late?

The longliners are catching plenty Hangler. Kane Wrigglesworth and Crafty caught 10 mGurnard on the longline and six on the rods last week. The guy next to me at Porangahau yesterday caught 10 gurnard in one 45 min set. The Kite fisher further down said he has been catching fish every day he can get the kite out lately. Kane caught another 4 this weekend at Ocean beach and others were brought to weighin from around the bay. It seems that the gurnard drought is over for now.

Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Sorry but does a shower end a drought? There were days when Gurnard were 10 a trip and you could release some knowing a larger fish was a real option, What are the views towards the Country Calendar programme? A viable way forward?

I caught one from Haumoana on saturday, sadly wasn't over 500g to weigh, they are definitely out there

Not in the numbers they used to be Andy. There getting some around North Shore Road as well apparently, but with the current clean flat seas and volume of crabs there should be more caught really. I even caught one a couple of weeks ago.
I liked the program on Karl Warr. I've met him and found him a thoughtful guy who wants to fish in a sustainable way. The current quota, is way to high and not sustainable. Local fish from local fishermen, with local stories, supplying local customer's directly with smaller catch numbers is the way forward for the entire country.

The study looked at official data between 1950 and 2013, and found that 24.7 million tonnes of fish went unreported, compared to 15.3 million that was reported.

This is the difference between the findings of scientists employed by the commercial fishing sector, and other scientists with no vested interest.
