The difference between this and the Mondeo described above is that the head gasket failed as a result of the fault on the car which the owner is liable for; not the same as having a fault fixed and then something else happen whilst the car is entirely out of his control. Seems to me that the answer is to include the £600 in the claim against the third party. He is liable for the damage that he has done so that will include an allowance for the condition of the car. The insurance company will try to go for basic trade value but they do have to take into account any other factors. The final amount is just down to the negotiation!
