I am pleased you have got legal advice,the sensible thing to do.
You will almost certainly be required to send your MT insurers a 'Incident report' Unwise to avoid doing this as it could impact your cover at a later date.
If the other party notifies there insurer the details will be put on insurers anti fraud data base so will be visible to your insurers.
I agree if near renewal it could impact your no claims for a period (would be refunded later) but if claim is a clear cut as you say should not be to long and should only be 10% of road risks section.
after a 25 year + run of no claims we had two last year, both our fault. Both claims where handled quickly and efficiently by our insurers. we have just renewed and premium was unaffected i.e. same as as last year.
So unless you have a poor claims record I still feel better to let you insurers deal with.
