The reason why you can't get a plumber for less than £X/hr plus callout is because no plumber anywhere charges less. Plumbers dont go around shooting each other in the foot! Of course If I was a train driver and I got together with other train drivers and said "We're not prepared to work for less than £X/Hr" its called a Union and is (More or less)OK. If I was to contact other independent garrages in the area and say "We shouldnt be charging less than £x/Hr" it would be called "Price Fixing" and we could be fined or even go to Prison!! Ho Humm

Re: foreigners??Jobs on the side!!
Posted by graham clark on July 28, 2006, 10:18 pm, in reply to "Re: foreigners??Jobs on the side!!" I operate a modern workshop employing 10 staff, I can't believe that this practice is going on in any workshop, I am aware that my staff do "homers" which I am unable to do anything about, as "it's only for a relation or it's my best friend". I certainly would never ever allow any member of staff to run their own business from my premises, as this would obviously be a conflict of interest, I would indeed take disciplinary action against an staff member who used his/her position in my company to gain work personally through meeting "my" customers. In employment legislation there is implied terms of employment, one of which (I don't know the technical wording, but my understanding is)is that the interest of the company must be withheld all all times. There is of course the insurance implications involved in workshop practices, can you imagine if one of you staff were seriously injured in you own workshop, repairing a car with your consent !!!!! I don't mean to cause an offence with this message it is purely my thought. Graham

You must have one hell of a tool box.......... The bottom line is if employers paid good techs a good wage they wouldn't have to do fiddle jobs to make ends meet. This should really be a thing of the past. Regards JW

Posted by Steve H on August 14, 2006, 7:25 am, in reply to "Re: foreigners??Jobs on the side!!" Might seem like a fine line but I'd say there is a difference between taking money off the tax man (though I'm obviously not condoning such illegal action!) and taking it off the man who gives you a weekly wage. As far as the whole question goes I reckon that you will never stop all your guys doing a bit from home and you probably shouldn't try as once they are away from work it's none of your business! However, allowing them to do it from your workshop does open you up to some nasty legal liabilities and potential loss of your own turnover - not a good idea
