Electricity prices #

I am currently looking at our electricity bills - we pay our landlord direct based on a meter reading.

The unit price has been 8.3 pence since dinosaurs ruled but will shortly be doubled.

Is this realistic?

Hi Steve

Our last quarter

First 386 units @ 15.08p
Next 1674 units @ 12.82p
Last 79 units @ 10.99p

That averages out @ 13.16p (2139 units)

Standing charge 94 days @ 26.44p (£24.85)

All prices subject to 5% vat

EDF Energy is our supplier

If he doubles your charge to 16.30p including standing charge, then it sounds about right, but bordering on the high side depending on consumption (the more you use the cheaper it gets)

Hi Steve

We pay 11.32p Kw/h + 62.8p per day standing charge. You just made me have a heart attack I didn't realise how much electricity had gone up. I think I need to start to shop around!

I am with EON, Just renewed last month at 11p per day and 9.03 per Kwh.

British gas was the cheapest at about 8.5 but I didn't think it was worth all the hassle to change.

I am sure there is a law stating that your landlord is not allowed to make a profit if he resells the electric to you.
I suggest you check what he is being charged & possibly contact Offgen.

Ian's right he cannot do that. I always use to sign up to a two year contract and 90 days before it's due to expire send them a letter saying I want cancel, you can get some good deals that way. If you can stay away from Direct Debit. Our bills are just about always estimated so I read the meter and ask them to send me a correct bill then I send them a cheque.

British Gas Business
First 350 units @ 9.02p
Next 1800 units @ 7.05p
Last 100 units @ 5.57p
No Contract.

I have also been onto Natwest Streamline for a reduction and got it.

Also Applied for a rate reduction and got it.

Have a go you won't get the reductions if you don't ask.

Thanks for the responses.

You have given me ammunition to try for a substantial reduction in the proposed costs.

Hopefully this thread will give other members the incentive to check their own utility bills more closely.

We all need to be looking at our costs much more closely these days!

After the last few posts I decided to get a few online quotes

Had an online quote from British Gas Business, then decided to call my current supplier EDF Energy

Mangaged to get a new fixed rate for 2 years

From last quarter bill:

Previous 13.16p avarage - Now fixed at 9.48p

Previous daily charge 26.44p - Now fixed at 27.00p

Fraction up on daily charge, but I am happier, did not really want the hassle of changing suppliers, I will just add 1p to the cost of an Engine Flush to cover the extra daily rate

If I had changed 3 months ago I would of saved about £80:00 plus vat on last bill

epilog:

I had a call from British Gas Business about half hour later after saving my online quote, the young lady was very persistent and was willing to come down to 6:00p

Perhaps a prize for who can get the best rate

Had a letter this morning from E-ON asking me to renew for 1 year.After a phone call to them got them down to
unit price 7.89
daily rate 22.14.

Can go home now.

MADE the time to look into this today.....

We are with npower, "Rolling Tariff"..... last quarter bill showed

20.5 first 1615 units
19.5 second 65 units
standing charge of 37.41p per day

Like Peter made online enquiry with British Gas Business, instant quote of

7.85 & 38.5p per day

Phoned npower who came back to me with

9.79 & £32.76 per quarter

British Gas must have been watching my screen as they phoned me within half hour, "negotiated" with them a little and been offered

7.61 & £38.00 per YEAR on Direct Debit
7.61 & £41.00 per YEAR on Cheque/Cash

As Keith says you dont get if you dont ask!

Just annoyed with myself that i've left it till now to enquire..... thanks for raising this matter Steve.

It seems to have been a good thing for quite a few members, which I am very pleased about.

I still don't know what is happening here on the farm though. I did point out the advantages of shopping around to my landlord thanks to replies from everyone here.

It's nearly 2 years ago now but we all need to look at ways to cut costs

My fixed 12 month contract with EDF is up on 1st April 2012, they are now quoting me from that date fixed for 12 months

Fixed daily charge 29.00p
Charge per unit 12.43p

I have now changed to British Gas to start from 1st April 2012. After the second billing period they will also credit my account with £100.00

New rate from British Gas (12 month contract, direct debit every quarter)

Daily charge 24.16p
Charge per unit 9.42p

This does seen strange as energy prices seem to be going up, but from 1st April I will be paying LESS than I was 2 years ago

Trade Waste Disposal:

We have a 600lt wheely Bin from the local council (Reigate & Banstead) who will only do a weekly pick up and charge us £650:00 per year (no negotiation)

Found a company in Brighton that was willing to do a 2 week pick up, hence halving our waste disposal cost, they pick up from the unit next door anyway

It pays to do a bit of homework on your business running costs

PS: When I rang EDF to get better price, the lady on the phone was a bit unhelpful, she could come down very slightly, but told me a cheaper rate was not available in my area.....hence they lost a customer

Will give Reigate and Bastead a bit of praise as our business rates have been halved for the last year and will be the same for this year

Hi Peter,

Only last week British Gas quoted me 22.72p Daily Charge and 9.09p per Kwh along with the £100 cash back.

Last week E-On quoted 7.565p Daily and 9.792p Kwh, This week it is 7.632 daily and 9.581p Kwh.

It does appear that the prices fluctuate quite a bit, but they must be getting near the lowest they can do now because E-On have always matched by best price, but this year they can't.

I did manage to negotiate with our local council as I only have my bin emptied every other week, so that halved the bill from them.

Best i can get is eon i use 20,000 p/a

day unit 10.74p
standing charge 20.3p per day

i pay £68 p/m for bins doing once every two weeks,i will look further into that saving!!

Yearly contract renewal due 1st April 2013 - Don't ignore the letter #

Hi All

Had a letter from British Gas to say that my electricity contract for another 12 months will be due from 1st April 2013, I do not have to do anything as it will automatically roll over with the same details

When I checked the new charges from next April, got a shock

Now 9.4 pence per unit, new rate 16.00
Daily charge now 24.16, new rate 39.00

Gave them a call and the lad said it's based on market prices they predict from 1st April 2013 (what a load of old pony)

Managed to get it down to 9.81 and 24.27 so quite happy

So word of warning if your renewal letter comes early, don't ignore it as your contract will roll over with inflated prices and you will be locked in for another year

Had a call from Utiitywise who told me that they could get me the best price on the market free of charge currently paying 9.72 per unit they came back after 2 days telling me best price 16.42 ,loads of pressure to take it,i declined called my supplier gave me 10.41.
The only way is to D.I.Y.

Something similar happened to me. I shopped around a few months ago and got 10.45p with no standing charges......plus £50 cash-back on my second bill.

As Steve says, it pays to shop around.
