I don't havr contempt for the 'great unwashed.' I just think they've been duped into voting against their own best interests by ridiculous patriotic and emotionally charged arguments that don't stand up to rational scrutiny. People didn't vote with their heads, but with their hearts, to simplify things somewhat. In a way it was a choice between voting for techocrats or demagogues, and the demagogues won people over with a set of 'patriotic' fairytales which we're more entertaining and told a better, brighter story about a rosy and easy future, compared to a system that doesn't appear to be working for an awful lot of people, who, naturally, voted 'against' it. Unfortunately the 'against' line is going to crash into the wall of reality where the alternative to the status quo of continued EU membership, is revealed as a pack of rose-tinted, nationalist, utopian, lies, completely detached from the real world. For too many people, the system isn't working, but that's true of countries all over the place who are not members of the EU. So, it follows that it cannot just be the fault of the EU. The malaise lies deeper. But telling people things are going to be better outside is false. They won't be. They could easily be worse and then who will one blame? And this trite idea that somehow voting to leave was linked to 'morality', simply illustrates how much 'religion' and emotions have hijacked the way people think about things. Ordinary people, the ones we supposedly care so much about, are going to be poorer outside the EU than inside, but perhaps that's a price worth paying for 'freedom.' To be honest, I think both 'freedom' and 'democracy' are way overrated.
