DJ I have a lot of respect for the cogency of your arguments but I do detect a quite smelly earth of hubris beneath it all. Who are you to talk about "social progress" and "modernity"? Had you noticed that Irish people still, largely give the lie to stereotypes of the West in being largely humble people of genuine warmth, unaffectedly sensible and smart, naturally humerous, in other words showing the best of human qualities? (This despite a history and present streaked with native treachery, anarcho types with a level of arrogance that is scary, plus rising tide as elsewhere of dull Panglossian coffee-addled youth.) Where do you think this comes from? Freakin' secular liberal modernity? My friend this comes from religion, from faith that there is a thing greater than your own sweet dusty ass. And it declines (there's a culture war on it) in proportion with to the ascent of former parenthetical sad-sacks. Please note that's not an argument for the wonders of Roman Catholicism! What is the significance of "integration" - whence this integration? You might as well say the Palestinians should stop whining and get with the program - after all they're "integrated" now: that's "the reality on the ground". Yes a putative benevolent empire / superstate looks good on paper because local wants and needs are more easily negotiated with a broadly based - big - infrastructure. Perhaps. But successful, stable empires need a thoroughgoing unpinning philosophy that's not only attractive but actually has something in it. The Brits offered Protestantism - quite pathetic. Globalism offers secular liberal humanist materialism. That's much worse! The cultural, social, economic integration you speak of was and remains largely unwanted and undesireable. I'd agree we are largely one people but very, very few seem aware of what this means today. It's hard when you have to go back about 1000 years and work backwards from there to get it before returning.
