Whilst Marx was brilliant at criticising and analysing many of the structural defects of capitalism, his ideas about what would replace it are muddled and vague. It's obvious how romantic and utopian he was if one reads the Communist Manifesto. It's soaked in German revolutionary romantism. The problem is, there really isn't any realistic alternative to liberal capitalism that works, or, more pessimistically could ever work, unless one follows the Chinese Communist Party's project, but it's doubtful that China resembles a socialist society. Unfortunately, at this late stage of western dominated liberal capitalism the chances of socialism taking over are close to zero. This is rather sad, as it would have been an interesting experiment, but it should have happened decades ago if there was to be a chance of altering the course of the particular Titanic we're on and its rendevouz with the giant, melting, iceberg up ahead. Marx's biggest mistake, which he appears to have recognised towards the end of his life, was the idea that socialism was 'destined' to replace capitalism, that this was historically 'inevitable.' That's his German romanticism and utopianism. My guess is, as the climate collapses, we're not heading for socialism, but devastating global warfare, famine and barbarism on an epic scale.
