If we really are serious about building effective resistance to the whole system, essential questioning and criticism needs to be done in a sympathetic, comradely manner aimed at creating movement solidarity and eventually convergence - not cynical, paranoid, denunciatory - or sectarian, which is what I see in the false comparison above between the Gilets Jaunes and XR, throwing one against the other to do one of them down. Yes, the questions must be asked as to who's behind what, as in all organisations but the way we approach those questions is very important for creating a positive, encouraging movement culture which is of fundamental importance for the rapid growth without which we will fail. We have to be able to go about that in a way that doesn't turn away new activists. Do we want massive movements - or do we just want to be "right" within our own sectarian beliefs? Because if we do really want those massive movements, we will need to be much more open and careful in the way we address people from movements with different focuses to us, feminists, antiracists, ecologists, and class-focused. None of us has the whole answer. XR did a great job in central London. The police knew all about their plans from the start. They had officers right in there in the planning groups - but it's very hard for the police to control very large numbers of active and determined people, who move about in unpredictable ways on the day. There's too much media attention on Central London for the police to use more violent methods of control, at least until the public has been turned more against XR.
