Hi Ian, this is something my dad used to tell me (felling old trees better for the environment in terms of o2 v co2). But I thought this had been disproved? Even a 1/16" annual growth on a large tree compared to 10' growth in height on a sapling Amounts to a great deal more carbon sequestration. If you have new evidence to support the older ideas I'm interested to read it. Definitely I can see this for plantations like coppices and pollards- the growth in old established trees coppiced can be incredible, and if the wood is built with/turned into books I can see it being a net gain in carbon sequestration. Not so much for charcoal, but I'd still rather heat with wood than coal/other fossil fuels, because at least it's a short turn around and can be a known quantity. Cheers
